Do you know the official fish of Aichi Prefecture? It is actually a prawn! Over at Ebi Senbei no Sato, whole prawns freshly caught from the Pacific Ocean are used in their crackers, making them the most popular souvenir from Aichi.
Head over to the Hana Festa Memorial Park in the afternoon. This park is one of the world’s largest rose gardens and has over 30,000 rose bushes in 7,000 varieties. The greatest numbers of roses are in bloom from late May to early June, so this is one of the most perfect times to visit.

(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hodakaso Sangetsu (Hot Spring) or similar
Spend the better part of your morning in Takayama by visiting its attractions like the Miyagawa Morning Market that sells local crafts, snacks and farm products such as vegetables, pickles and flowers. The beautifully preserved Old Town area, especially the Sannomachi Street should not be missed. A stroll through the street will allow you to see many old homes, shops, sake breweries and miso shops, some of which have been in business here for centuries.
Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go this morning. Nestled in the mountains of the Japan Alps are traditional gassho-zukuri farm houses whose roofs are built entirely without nails. Designed to withstand heavy snowfall, the unique structure of the houses make them particularly picturesque.
Day 03 (Mon, 10 Jun’19)
Okuhida – Kamikochi
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Kamikochi Hotel Shirakabaso or similar
Ride the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway up into the clouds! The unique double-decker cable cars will bring you up the side of the Hotaka Mountain Range as you take in the surrounding views. At the top, 2,156m above sea level, let the panoramic view of the still snow-capped Northern Japanese Alps take your breath away!
As the crown jewel of the Japan Alps, Kamikochi is one of Japan’s most scenic places. Kamikochi is a basin at 1,500 meters above sea level and the Japan Alps rise an additional 1,500 meters from there, creating a stunningly magnificent background with the beautiful aquamarine Azusa River in the foreground. With your accommodation for tonight – Kamikochi Hotel Shirakabaso – located right within Kamikochi, you can take in the wonderful nature at your own pace. One of the simplest way is to hike the trails along Azusa River from Taisho Pond to Myojin Bridge which is a mostly flat terrain and requires no hiking experience.

Kamikochi – Matsumoto
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hotel Shoho (Hot Spring) or similar
First up for today is another attraction of the Japan Alps - Snow Walls of Mt Norikura. Mt Norikura stands at 3,026 metres and is the third highest peak in the Northern Japan Alps. From late spring to early summer, a corridor is carved through the snow and in June, you will be able to access the higher portions.
As you head to Matsumoto in the afternoon, you will visit one of Japan’s National Treasure - Matsumoto Castle. Most of Japan’s castles have been built atop hills but interestingly, Matsumoto Castle was constructed on flat land and surrounded by three extensive moats.
Day 05 (Wed, 12 Jun’19)

As the last residence of Japan’s premier ukiyo-e artist, Hokusai, his art can be seen at the Hokusai Museum and Takai Kozan Memorial Museum.
Located at the base of a mountain, Togakushi Shrine consists of a lower, middle and upper shrine, each housing different gods. A short hike is needed to reach the upper shrine, but the pathways lined with 400-year-old cedar trees and towering Mt. Togakushi in the background make the walk particularly beautiful.
