Day 01 (Sun, 03 Mar’19)
Singapore – Haneda – Hakone
(-/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Laforet Club Hakone Gora Yu no Sumika (Hot Spring) or similar
The seaside town of Kamakura is a great first stop for your journey. Formerly the centre of Japan’s government, numerous temples, shrines and historical sites are located here, including the famous Great Buddha. The 11.4-metre-high bronze statue of Amida Buddha is the second tallest in Japan and has been kept intact since its construction in the mid-13th century, outlasting its surrounding building.
Whenever local Japanese see the blossoming of Plum trees, they know that winter has come to an end and Spring is right around the corner. If time allows, we will stop by Odawara while enroute to Hakone. At Soga Bessho Bairin, Mt Fuji forms a dramatic background to over 35,000 plum trees, making this one of the best place to welcome Spring.
Day 02 (Mon, 04 Mar’19)
Hakone
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Laforet Club Hakone Gora Yu no Sumika (Hot Spring) or similar
Begin your day at Japan’s first museum featuring Venetian Glass. Passing through the spectacular 9-meter Glass Corridor of the Hakone Venetian Glass Museum with 160,000 drops of crystal glass sparkling in the sun will bring you into a magical world created by the delicate and graceful Venetian Glass.
Afterwards, take the Hakone ropeway up to Owakudani, a crater formed from the eruption of Mt Hakone around 3000 years ago. See the sulphurous fumes, hot springs and rivers on the mountain and admire the splendid view of Mt Fuji from here.
The Hakone Open Air Museum is an art lover’s paradise with unique art pieces spread across 70,000 square metres of open space. Art pieces combine beautifully with the surrounding trees, mountains and valley to create a harmonious balance with nature. The museum includes a massive multicoloured spiral tower you can climb, multiple play spaces for children amongst art, and one of the best collections Picasso’s work.
Day 03 (Tue, 05 Mar’19)
Hakone – Shimoda
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Shimoda Tokyu Hotel (Hot Spring) or similar
Shaped like an upside-down bowl, Mt Omuro is an extinct volcano covered in mountain grass with a 300-metre-wide crater. Take a chair lift up the mountain to stroll round the crater and be treated to 360-degree panoramic views of the surroundings which include Mt Fuji, Hakone and the seven islands of Izu.
The Izu peninsula juts out from the Honshu mainland into the Pacific Ocean. It’s spectacularly rugged coastline was formed by the eruption of Mt Omuro over 4,000 years ago and worn down by the ceaseless battle between the rocks and the Pacific Ocean. The Kadowaki Suspension Bridge hangs 23 metres above a gorge in the cliffs, giving you one of the best views here along the coast.
Day 04 (Wed, 06 Mar’19)
Shimoda
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Shimoda Tokyu Hotel (Hot Spring) or similar
Get ready for the highlight of your trip: the Kawazu Sakura Festival. Kawazuzakura is an early flowering variety of cherry tree and start opening around early February but do so at a relatively slow pace. Over 2 million people come to Minami Izu in search of this deep pink blossom seen on more than 8,000 trees stretching for over 4 kilometers along the river!
No visit to Shimoda will be complete without a stroll along the Perry Road. Located between the monument of Perry's landing and Ryosenji temple where the treaty was signed, this quaint stone pedestrian pathway showcases the unique sea cucumber wall that Izu is famous for. The walk itself is only a short fifteen minutes from end to end but it is packed with traditional craft shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs while being crisscrossed by numerous picturesque bridges.
Day 05 (Thu, 07 Mar’19)
Shimoda – Shuzenji
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hotel Laforet Shuzenji Sanshisuimei (Private Hot Spring) or similar
In the morning, take a sightseeing boat around Dogashima, the best way to see the area’s fantastic stone formations, cliffs and caves, formed over many years by volcanic eruptions and erosion by the sea. Sail into Tensodo Cave, a large cave with aquamarine blue water reflecting on the walls and a big hole in the ceiling from which the rays of sunlight stream through.
Later, walk around the peaceful town of Shuzenji Onsen. The oldest hot spring town in Izu, it is home to Shuzenji Temple, an important cultural property, and many other historical sights. The rich history and traditional beauty of the town make it an attractive place for an afternoon stroll.
