Arriving in Toyama this morning, have a good lunch before visiting the Toyama Glass Art Museum. Housed in a building that is itself a work of art by architect, Kuma Kengo, the museum showcases contemporary glass art pieces by artists from around the world. Located in the same building as the central public library, there are ample spaces for quiet admiration of the art pieces and even a glass art garden featuring works by glass art master, Dale Chihuly.
Day 02 (Thu, 21 Dec’23)
Toyama – Shirakawa

Take a scenic ride through the abundant natural scenery of the Shogawa gorge on the Shogawa River Cruise this morning. Once used to transport timber from the mountainous Gokayama and Hida regions, the cruise now takes visitors along the picturesque route between Komaki dam, Japan’s first high river dam, to Omaki Onsen, a secluded hot spring inn accessible only by boat.
Inami Town is famous for its fantastic wood carvings known as Inami Chokoku, a traditional Japanese craft marked by superior craftsmanship and attention to detail. Wood carvers were brought here from Kyoto in the 18th century to help to rebuild Zuisenji Temple, creating elaborate and intricate wood carvings that are unmatched in skill up to today. See the wonderful wood carvings at Zuisenji, learn about the intricacies of Inami Chokoku, and try your hand at a wood carving experience where you will get to create your own original masterpiece.
Day 03 (Fri, 22 Dec’23)
Shirakawa – Takayama

Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawago this morning. Nestled in the mountains of the Japan Alps are traditional gassho-zukuri farm houses whose roofs are built entirely without nails. Designed to withstand heavy snowfall, the unique structure of the houses make them particularly picturesque.
In the afternoon, take a stroll round the old-style streets of Takayama where merchant houses dating back to the Edo period have been beautifully preserved. Step into the many shops and sake breweries along the street and try some of the local specialities.
Day 04 (Sat, 23 Dec’23)
Takayama – Tobira Onsen

Begin the day with a ride on the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway up into the clouds! The unique double-decker cable cars will bring you on an ascent of over 1000m up the side of the Hotaka Mountain Range as you take in the surrounding views. At the top, 2,156m above sea level, let the panoramic view of the still snow-capped Northern Japanese Alps take your breath away!
After lunch, pay a visit to the Matsumoto City Art Museum. Dedicated to artists from or inspired by Matsumoto, the museum features collections of artworks from local artists, including a permanent collection by its most famous artist, Kusama Yayoi.
Day 05 (Sun, 24 Dec’23)
Tobira Onsen – Karuizawa

The largest glass museum and shop in Japan, Suwa Glass no Sato showcases and sells a huge variety of glass art and glassware. Here, you can enjoy the different glass works, including Japan’s largest crystal ball, and pick up some unique glass crafts as souvenirs.
Arriving in Karuizawa this afternoon, make a stop at Kumoba Pond. Meaning ‘cloud pond’, the tranquil pond reflects the clouds along with the surrounding trees and sky on its mirror-like surface on a calm day. Take a leisurely stroll round the pond and admire the view as it changes with each vantage point.
Day 06 & 07 (Mon & Tue, 25 & 26 Dec’23)

You will have two full days free to enjoy skiing or snowboarding at the Prince Snow Resorts Karuizawa. Advanced snowmaking capabilities guarantees snow-covered runs even from early November here. With a variety of trails catered mainly towards beginner and intermediate skiers, Karuizawa also provides a detailed terrain park (depending on snow conditions) with various features and a Kids' Park with sledding, tubing and other snow fun.
Non-skiers need not worry as there is a plethora of other activities to engage in. Outlet shopping is readily available at Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza where around 240 shops provide last season’s items at marked down prices, while a short trip out to the charming area of Kyu Karuizawa Ginza will bring you in the vicinity of numerous shops, cafes, restaurants, museums and other sights.

Heading to Tokyo this morning, you will stop by at the old town of Kawagoe. Known as “little Edo”, Kawagoe is filled with clay-walled warehouses and shops reminiscent of olden Japan. Once important to trade and commerce in Tokyo, the historic warehouses have been converted into shops and restaurants, beckoning visitors along with its neighbouring Candy Alley of stores selling old-school sweets.
A popular nature site near Tokyo, Mt Takao attracts millions of visitors each year. Take Japan’s steepest cable car incline up the side of the mountain and admire breath-taking views of Tokyo city from the observation deck while you soak in the fresh mountain air.
