Arriving in Toyama this morning, have a good lunch before visiting the Toyama Glass Art Museum. Housed in a building that is itself a work of art by architect, Kuma Kengo, the museum showcases contemporary glass art pieces by artists from around the world. Located in the same building as the central public library, there are ample spaces for quiet admiration of the art pieces and even a glass art garden featuring works by glass art master, Dale Chihuly.

Arguably the best way to enjoy the splendid view of the Tateyama mountain range, go on a Toyama Bay Cruise this morning. Sailing out into the 1,000m deep Toyama Bay, recognised as one of the most beautiful bays in the world, you will get to experience the 3,000m high mountain range at a closer distance.
Today’s lunch will be at Ryokan Dangoya, a Japanese guesthouse known for its excellent local cuisine. Meals here are prepared with care to ensure the highest quality, using fresh mountain vegetables picked from their grounds, clear spring water from Mt Oiwa, and traditional cooking methods passed down over 125 years.
Day 03 (Sat, 03 Jun’23)

Today you will travel through the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a scenic route that traverses Kurobe gorge, Mt Akazawadake and Mt Tateyama. It is crossed using a variety of transportation, including one of the few trolley busses remaining in Japan, an underground cable car, and Japan’s only unsupported ropeway. Bursting forth with fresh greenery, you can admire the views of the mountain brimming with new life in this season as you make your way through the Alpine Route from Ogizawa to Murodo.
Over at Murodo, you will also be able to see the famous Tateyama snow corridor. A road with walls of snow on both sides, the snow corridor reaches heights of up to 20m when it opens in April. Catch sight of the snow walls before they melt and enjoy the feel of snow in summer!
Day 04 (Sun, 04 Jun’23)
Omachi – Kamikochi

The crown jewel of the Japan Alps, Kamikochi is one of Japan’s most scenic places and where you will be heading today. A basin located 1,500m above sea level and surrounded by the Japan Alps rising another 1,500m around it, the scenery here is stunningly beautiful and perfect for an escape into nature. Roughly 15km of hiking trails follow the Azusa River with mostly flat terrain, making it a pleasant walk to enjoy the marvellous scenery of aquamarine river backed by the towering Alps and fresh foliage. Take a walk along part of the trails and bask in the beauty and serenity of nature here.
This evening, do some stargazing from the comfort of your room at Kamikochi Lemeiesta Hotel. Located in the protected area of Kamikochi and away from the lights and noise of the city, you will find yourself immersed in peaceful surrounds with only the sounds of nature and the shining stars above.
Day 05 (Mon, 05 Jun’23)
Kamikochi – Matsumoto

One of the most beautiful and complete of Japan’s original castles, Matsumoto Castle is one of four castles designated as National Treasures of Japan. Its unique black exterior has earned it the name of “crow castle” while its well-maintained interior provides insight into history. From the top of the castle, a splendid view of the city and the Japan Alps can be seen.
Nearby the castle is the charming Nawate Street lined with quaint shops selling snacks and souvenirs, embodying the atmosphere of an old castle town. You will notice many frog designs and sculptures along the street, a reference to the past when the songs of frogs echoed through the riverbank. The Japanese word for ‘frog’ also sounds like ‘return home’, thus making it symbolic of a safe return.

Matsumoto

This morning, pay a visit to the Matsumoto City Art Museum. Dedicated to artists from or inspired by Matsumoto, the museum features collections of artworks from local artists, including a permanent collection by its most famous artist, Kusama Yayoi.
Located at the base of a mountain, Togakushi Shrine consists of a lower, middle and upper shrine, each housing different gods. A short hike is needed to reach the upper shrine, but the pathways lined with 400-year-old cedar trees and towering Mt. Togakushi in the background make the walk particularly beautiful.

Take an express train down to Tokyo this morning where you will have the rest of the day free for shopping and leisure in Japan’s capital city.
