Day 02
Haneda – Chitose – Asahikawa
(C: -/L/D) • (D: -/-/-)
Hotel: I: Asahikawa Grand Hotel; II: JR Inn Asahikawa or similar
[Car pick-up at Chitose Airport Toyota branch]
Rolling pastoral landscape under sunny blue skies is one of the key images that comes to mind when Hokkaido is mentioned. In recent years, many farms have started their own restaurants on site by showcasing their own local products and stunning scenery. Over at Kacha Ice Cream & Restaurant, homemade ice cream using seasonal produce and dairy products from their own farm are the highlights. Pure snowmelt from Mt Daisetsu – Hokkaido’s highest mountain – is the reason behind Asahikawa’s thriving sake industry. Housed in a traditional-styled building built way back in 1909, Takasago Sake Brewery will take you through the evolution of sake culture by its antique sake artefacts and bottles. Complete your visit with a tasting session at the end before checking-in to your hotel tonight.
Day 03
Asahikawa – Abashiri
(C: B/L/D) • (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: C: Hokuten no Oka (Hot Spring); D: Abashiri Koso (Hot Spring) or similar
Spring comes late to Hokkaido but when it arrives, all flowers seem to bloom at the same time. Today is the time for some major flower power, beginning at the Takinoue Park. Shibazakura Festival is one of the most unique and beautiful festivals in Hokkaido’s flower calendar. You will fully understand why as you take meandering paths across the sprawling hillside, carpeted by the bright pinks, purple and pure whites of the Shibazakura. Next up in the afternoon is the Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park, where over 1.2 million tulips of more than 120 different kinds make for countless photo moments.
Day 04
Abashiri – Shiretoko
(C: B/L/D) • (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: Shiretoko Grand Hotel (Hot Spring) or similar
Staggering feats can be achieved by one’s passion and the Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park is one such example. About 70% of the flowers here are planted by hand by the owner, Mr Chubachi himself! These tiny flowers form an amazing sea and is one image of Hokkaido that you will not forget. Later in the afternoon, you will be able to see the staggering sight of Oshikoshin waterfalls, a spectacular view adjacent to the coastal road.
Day 05
Shiretoko
(C: B/L/D) • (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: C: Shiretoko Grand Hotel (Hot Spring); D: Shiretoko Grand Hotel (Hot Spring) or similar
Hokkaido is well-known for the beauty of its landscapes and Shiretoko is one of the last pristine wilderness left in Japan. One of the crown jewels of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Shiretoko Five Lakes. Formed long ago by volcanic eruption, these five lakes look whimsically like a god’s handprint. To protect the fragile ecosystem of the surrounding virgin forest, an 800-metre, wooden elevated boardwalk was built to allow you to enjoy views of the Shiretoko First Lake, Sea of Okhotsk, and soaring mountains. Moreover, you can take the Shiretoko Cruise later on to enjoy the breath-taking scenery of this amazing natural site.
Day 06
Shiretoko – Lake Akan
(C: B/L/D) • (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: C: Akan Tsuruga Yuku no Sato (Hot Spring); D: Akan Tsuruga Wings (Hot Spring) or similar
Heading down to the Lake Akan area today, along the way you will see the beautiful Lake Mashu, a caldera lake with one of the world’s clearest waters and dominated by sheer cliffs of over 300 metres. You can also visit Mt Iou, called Atosanupuri in the Ainu language which literally translates to ‘Naked Mountain’. It is an active volcano peppered with vents emitted plumes of smoke and sulphur. Later in the evening, you will learn more about the Ainu – indigenous people of Hokkaido – over at the Ainu Kotan, a few steps from your hotel. Here, you can experience the ancient culture of the Ainu from their traditional music and dance performances, and intricate handicraft.
Day 07
Lake Akan – Tokachigawa
(C: B/L/D) • (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: Tokachigawa Onsen Daiichi (Hot Spring) or similar
Lake Onneto is first up today and its water changes colour depending on sunlight and temperature, going from a gleaming bottle green to a deep azure. After that will be the special local activity with Follow Me Japan! Part of the rewards of travelling is to get to know people from other countries and walks of life. Be introduced to the warmth and passion of the people of Tokachi on our Tokachi Activity Day. This special day was introduced a few years ago and was a real hit with our holidaying crowd. See Hokkaido from the eyes of the locals and experience the real Hokkaido on this day!
