Day 02
Nagoya – Takayama
(D: B/-/D)
Hotel: Hidatei Hanaougi (Hot Spring) or similar
(Car pick-up in Nagoya city)
During the Edo period, there were five roadways connecting Edo to the outlying areas. The Nakasendo, running through Central Japan and linking Edo to Kyoto, was one of them. Magome is one of the sixty-nine post towns that line the Nakasendo. The history of the place is almost palpable as you follow the winding stone-flagged path on the steep slope that winds its way up the Kiso Valley. Amidst the low traditional buildings, you can almost hear the clip-clap of horses and the voices of merchants. Arriving into Takayama city in the afternoon, you can enjoy everyone’s favourite pastime here – sampling local fare. While there are plenty of opportunities to do this throughout Takayama's charming streets, stepping into one of the numerous sake breweries in the Takayama Old Town is going to be worthwhile even if only to breathe the heady aromas and wander among the sake vats. A visit to miso shops is also recommended, as you can see bubbling pots of fresh miso with small paper cups around and feel free to help yourself to a taste!
Day 03
Takayama
(D: B/L/D)
Hotel: Hidatei Hanaougi (Hot Spring) or similar
Next up is the Shirakawa-Go*, nestled in the high mountains of the Japan Alps. Here in this UNESCO World Heritage Site are traditional houses with its unique gassho-zukuri farm houses built entirely without nails. They are designed to withstand the large amounts of heavy snow that falls in this region during winter and their large attic space were used for the cultivation of silk worms. If you have worked up an appetite walking around in the cool spring air, try one of the Hida Beef skewers here. Seeing the marbled meats sizzling on the charcoal grill and smelling the wonderful scent wafting from the beef, be forewarned: One skewer is never enough! The relatively less explored neighbor of the Shirakawa-Go, Gokayama has its own unique charm that can be appreciated more when you join our specially-organised activity day. Nestled in deep mountain valley and without the crowds that visit Shirakawa-go, you will gain a deeper appreciation of the grand surroundings and a better understanding of the locals here after our unique activities.
Day 04
Takayama – Toyama
(D: B/-/-)
Hotel: ANA Crowne Plaza Toyama or similar
Today, we will visit Hida Furukawa in the morning of the Hida Furukawa Festival. Although the actual festival starts from afternoon the night where this normally tranquil town erupts into celebration with the Okoshi Daiko procession, you can already feel the excitement and anticipation in the air! Shops, post offices, schools all close for this day and you can see the town members bringing their festive floats out from the special warehouses, polishing them up for the festival. Leaving the festivities of Hida Furukawa, you will visit Matsukawa Park in the city of Toyama. This park has a 3.5-kilometer promenade that has been created with 500 cherry trees along the Matsukawa River which flows through the center of the city.
Day 05
Toyama – Wakura Onsen
(D: B/L/D)
Hotel: Aenokaze (Hot Spring) or similar
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is an amazing journey though some of the most spectacular scenery in Japan. This route was carefully built with lots of scenic sites to see and that the surrounding environment is not damaged. Consequently, three lines go entirely under tunnels; among them, two are trolleybus lines. Trolleybuses have all gone from Japan, except for these two lines which are still used here as they don't exhaust gas. This crossing is particularly popular with visitors especially in mid-April to mid-June for views of the snow corridor. Traversing the Alpine Route, you will take a combination of cable cars, trolley buses and a ropeway above, through and over the Japan Alps to complete the journey. Before heading to your hotel for a good rest, you will visit Le Musee De H. The renowned patissier Hironobu Tsujiguchi was born right here in Nanao city and his café will provide you with many blissful moments – from your first step into the beautifully designed interiors to the heavenly pastries that are as beautiful to admire as they are to eat.
Day 06
Wakura Onsen
(D: B/-/D)
Hotel: Aenokaze (Hot Spring) or similar
The Wajima Morning Market has to be the best collection of everything good in Ishikawa. With friendly locals selling freshly-caught seafood, seasonal produce from surrounding mountains and beautiful lacquerware, this market is symbolic of the charms of Ishikawa. After enjoying the happy bustle of the morning market, you will travel along the Noto coast to the Shiroyone Senmaida, a sprawling hillside of terraced rice fields which ranks amongst Japan’s “Special Place of Scenic Beauty”. Because of paddies' small size and various shapes, no machinery can be used for farming therefore and all the work needs to be done by hand, unlike the normal rice fields on the flat lands. Looking at the beautiful landscape created by these green rice paddies and the blue sea forming a perfect backdrop, we can appreciate the labour of the farmers here even more.
Day 07
Wakura Onsen
(D: B/-/D)
Hotel: Aenokaze (Hot Spring) or similar
First up this morning is the Chirihama Nagisa Beach driveway. Over here, you can drive along miles of unspoilt golden sands with rolling waves as gentle company. Driving along the coast here is an experience of a Japan far removed from the major cities of the eastern seaboard. The pace of life is slow and the people warm and friendly. Heading into Kanazawa city in the afternoon, you will first explore Kenrokuen. Built around the six attributes of a prefect garden, this is one of Japan’s top three most beautiful gardens and the most recognizable representative of Ishikawa. Not to be missed whenever in Kanazawa is Higashi Chaya. A Chaya is a traditional place where geisha have been entertaining guests since the Edo period. Now, the meticulously-maintained two-storied wooden houses are reminiscent of a time gone by. Although the townscape remains nostalgically charming, these Chaya are now home to gift shops selling local specialties like gold leaf products, green tea and traditional Japanese sweets.
