Arriving in Wakkanai, begin by visiting the northernmost tip of Japan, Cape Soya! Surrounded by the sea, parks, monuments and the rolling hills of Soya in the background, you can look across the sea to Russia on a clear day. Take a picture with the Monument of Japan’s Northern Most Point to commemorate your visit here!
Day 02
Wakkanai – Rebun – Rishiri

Take a ferry to Rebun Island off the coast of Hokkaido. Due to the location of the island and ocean currents, the sea urchin hereare known to be of especially high quality. Pay a visit to the Unimuki Experience Center where you can experience peeling the fresh sea urchin for yourself, and taste how delicious it is! Going round the island, make a stop at Cape Sukoton at the northernmost tip of Rebun, from which you can see the vast expanse of sea and nearby rocky islands. Next, look out onto the stretch of rugged cliffs at Cape Sukai, arguably the best place to enjoy the clear, sea water. Depending on light conditions, the water appears blue, green or emerald green.
Rebun is known as the floating flower garden due to its over 300 varieties of flowers, including many indigenous species. See and learn about these unique alpine flowers at the Takayama Botanical Garden. Going up to the Momoiwa Observatory, enjoy the alpine flowers on the rounded hill known as “peach rock” along with the view of nearby Rishiri Island which you will take a ferry to next.
Day 03
Rishiri – Wakkanai

Beginning your tour round Rishiri Island, visit Himenuma Pond at the base of Mt Rishiri. Both the reflection of Mt Rishiri in the pond and the actual mountain can be seen at the same time from the path that goes round the pond. Known as “Shiroi Koibito Hill” because the image of Mt Rishiri taken from here was used on the packaging for Hokkaido’s famous cookie, the Numaura Observatory is a view point from which you can look out onto Mt Rishiri, Otatomari Pond and Numaura Beach. Going up close to Otatomari Pond in the Numaura Wetland, you will be able to see beautiful scenes of the island’s largest pond with Mt Rishiri in the background. Heading to the southernmost part of the island, see the strangely shaped rock formations at Senboshimisaki Park. Try looking for sea life like sea urchins in the clear water and feed the harbour seals that come in summer before heading to the ferry terminal to go back to Wakkanai.
Day 04
Wakkanai – Nayoro

Going to the Noshappu Aquarium today, you will get to see around 3,000 sea creatures of 120 different species, featuring sea life that is bred in the cold currents of the north, including the clione “sea angels”. Be surrounded by fish in a large cylinder tank, watch the seals put on a show, and get up close and personal with some of the creatures at the touch pool.
Moving on to the Sarobetsu Primeval Flower Garden, witness wide open fields decorated with alpine wetland plants such as daylilies, lingonberry and sundew as you stroll along the boardwalk through the garden.
If the weather permits, head to the observatory to do some stargazing tonight! Nayoro’s geographical and topographical conditions make it ideal for observing the night skies whether through a powerful telescope or with your naked eye.
Day 05
Nayoro – Furano

Using rice fields as a canvas and 6 varieties of rice as the medium, Rice Paddy Art is a sight to see! Spanning 40 metres by 170 metres, the massive art work can be viewed from a scaffolding next to the field.
An internationally renowned sake brand, Otokoyama Sake Brewery has a long history in making top rate sake. Housing a brewery, museum and garden in its complex, get an up close view of the brewing process and see artefacts used in sake brewing long ago. Sample some of the sake and buy your favourites home!
More often seen in pictures, you can see the real Shirogane Blue Pond for yourself today. The azure blue of the water is caused by its mineral composition and makes a fascinating sight juxtaposed against the sombre grey trees.
Enjoy the cheerful blossoms at Shikisai no Oka, the “Hill of Four Seasons”, this afternoon. The undulating hills of flowers are especially gorgeous in summer when in full bloom and can be appreciated by strolling through the park, or taking a ride on the tractor bus.
Day 06
Furano – Sapporo

Head to the rolling flower fields of Farm Tomita today! Famous for their lavender, the farm is home to vast expanses of flower fields that reach out into the distance. Bask in the sight, and smell, of calming lavender, and frolic amid a rainbow carpet of colourful flowers!
Continuing your enjoyment of flowers, head to Saika no Sato next for more lavender fields and other flowers spread across the 6 hectares of this farm. Enjoy the view of Mt Tokachidake and Mt Ashibetsudake along with the flowers and try picking lavender for yourself!
A man-made lake surrounded by virgin forests, immerse yourself in the nature of Hokkaido at Lake Kanayama. Stroll on the shores of the lake and enjoy the summer breeze as it carries the scent of lavender from the field next to it.
