Day 02
Haneda – Chitose – Noboribetsu

A short drive away from the airport is the Chitose Salmon Aquarium, with an underwater observation room that grants you a front row view of the fishes. Autumn is the very time to observe the unflinchingly determined salmon make the purposeful swim upstream. Be in awe, be humbled as you watch the salmon persevere on their ardous final journey home. Following this, let Wagyu Beef Loghouse Bibi introduce you to the world of Hokkaido food. Catch tantalizing whiffs of barbecue meat before you even step foot into the restaurant! As the door opens, you will be greeted with the mouth-watering sight and sound of tender cuts of wagyu beef sizzling on the charcoal grill. After getting your tummies filled, take a leisurely stroll along the scenic shore of Lake Shikotsu – one of Hokkaido’s most photogenic caldera lakes before heading for check-in at your hotel.

Noboribetsu – Hakodate

If you enjoyed soaking in the sulphur onsen or hot spring of your ryokan the night before, and wondered about the source of the water, wonder no longer! A visit to Noboribetsu Hell Valley is lined up this morning. As the name suggests, brace yourself for spectacular sights of hot steam vents, sulphurous streams and a rather oppressive smell of sulphur in the air. Next, travel south by taking the scenic drive along the coast facing the Pacific Ocean and you will arrive at Hakodate. Opened in 1859 as one of Japan’s first international trading ports along with Yokohama and Nagasaki, Hakodate boasts of a tapestry of architecture that is as beautiful as it is varied. Take in the history of this charming town on your leisurely walk along the sloping streets of Motomachi. Various churches, Chinese temples and old consulate buildings are all reminders that foreign settlers once lived here. As the sun sets, a visit to the Mt Hakodate Ropeway is in store. Awarded the three star rating in the “Michelin Green Guide Japon”, the ropeway brings you 334 metres above sea level to one of the Three Major Night Views of Japan.

Hakodate – Rusutsu

For many, the mere mention of Hokkaido invariably conjures up the very image of the freshest seafood caught from the surrounding seas. Over at the Hakodate Morning Market, take in the sights and sounds of a bustling market where ‘fresh’ is the order of the day. Stop by Hakodate Bay for a spot of shopping and to taste the famed Hokkaido cheesecakes before heading back up north. En route to Rusutsu, you will first pass by the Onuma Quasi-National Park. The view of Mt Komagatake reflected on the waters of the island-studded lakes has garnered Onuma the honour as one of Japan’s New Three Famous Views, making it an ideal spot to take a break before continuing your journey to Rusutsu.

From June to late October, various kinds of fruits are available for picking in the Soubetsu Fruit Village. Visiting the farm this morning, you will get to experience the simple joy of apple-picking, a far cry from the usual supermarket routine. Biting into the crisp sweetness of Hokkaido’s apples plucked straight from the trees yourself will doubtlessly remind you of the generosity of Mother Nature as well. How about a friendly competition for grabbing the biggest apple? In the afternoon, you will step right into the pages of your geography textbook at Mt Usu. Taking the ropeway up this active volcano to the observation deck will provide a sweeping view of Lake Toya and the Showa Shinzan. Learn about the amazing formation of this new mountain too!

Rusutsu – Sapporo

Leaving Rusutsu this morning, autumn foliage will be the focus of the day. Firstly, the mountains of Niseko where you will find the Shinsen Marsh – which translates to "The Place of Gods". Enjoy your walk on the raised wooden walkway that winds through lush foliage, culminating in the marsh where the world seemingly opens up right before your eyes. Sprays of yellow, orange and red furnished by Autumn adds to the brilliance reflected on the tranquil water surface. Before heading to the urbanity of Sapporo city, the Hoheikyo Dam is a must-visit. The area between the dam entrance and dam is a designated environmental protection area and thus can only be accessed by an electric bus ride through a tunnel. The peculiar pairing of Nature and dam combine to make this an optimal foliage viewing spot.

Sapporo
