Outside, odd-shaped sandstone rocks covered with fast-moving, crab-like creatures are quite the sight! We will then continue on to Uwajima and visit Doi Pearl, Ehime’s oldest pearl farm to learn about the process of pearl cultivation from nucleus implant to pearl harvesting, and at the same time deepen your knowledge about the pearl culture. After lunch in a local restaurant, continue to Uchiko, once the center of traditional wax- and paper-making. Sitting in the mountains outside of Imabari, it’s a very imposing building that can best be described as “modern Japanese château”. There are three floors of shops selling everything from towels, to clothing, with a large area dedicated to a French tea shop and another to the produce of Ehime. After lunch at a local restaurant, we will stop by Kirosan Observatory, uniquely designed almost into the mountain. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views. While officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly referred to as Miyajima, Japanese for "shrine-island". Like the torii gate, the shrine's main buildings are built over water. On the island, you'll also find wild deer wandering around freely along the main visitor's route. Head to Mount Misen, the highest peak on Miyajima and on clear days you'll find spectacular views of the Seto Inland Sea and even Hiroshima City. A ropeway leads up the mountain from the town, but hiking up is possible too. Even when taking the ropeway, reaching Misen's various attractions still requires a considerable amount of walking. Although the Shishi-iwa Observatory is located right beside the upper ropeway station, the mountain peak is still another 100 meters higher up and about a kilometer away. Monkeys and deer can be seen along the paths, especially around the ropeway station. Have lunch in Miyajima and head to Hiroshima to visit the Peace Memorial Park before checking into the hotel.
