Singapore – Haneda – Kochi
(-/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Auberge Tosayama (Hot Spring) or similar
The first stop upon arriving in Kochi will be one of its amazing natural sights, Ryugado Cave. Formed over roughly 175 million years, it is one of Japan’s most famous limestone caves and a designated natural monument and historical site. Stalactites and stalagmites fill the 4km long cave which bellies a few waterfalls and prehistoric artefacts as well.
Head to Kochi Castle next to see one of Japan’s 12 preserved original castles. Built in the 1600s, Kochi castle is the only castle to have had all its main buildings preserved, giving an accurate representation of an Edo period castle. Surviving natural disasters, the war, orders for disposal and the passage of time, it is no wonder that this castle is considered the “castle of fortune”.
Day 02 (Wed, 15 May’19)
Kochi
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Snow Peak Ochi Niyodogawa or similar
Tosa washi is a handmade Japanese paper that is thin and strong. Considered a traditional Japanese craft and an Intangible Cultural Property, the art of papermaking has been perfected here over the last 1,000 years. Using this durable Japanese paper you will get to create your own Tosa washi lamp today.
In the afternoon, head over to your campsite at Snow Peak Ochi Niyodogawa. Here, camping is made easy and comfortable, allowing you to relish the great outdoors without having to rough it out. Staying in a comfortable wooden trailer house designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, wake up to a wonderful view of the mountains and river right outside your window.
Camping is not complete without some outdoor activities, and with a campsite next to the Niyodogawa River, it is only apt to go rafting in the sparkling waters! Under the blue sky, surrounded by green mountains and clear waters, have a splashing good time paddling down the river. After all the activity, end the night with a specially catered dinner under the starry sky.
Day 03 (Thu, 16 May’19)
Kochi – Nakatado
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Asan Kotonami (Private Hot Spring) or similar
A narrow ravine created by the flow of the Yoshino River over 200 million years, Oboke Gorge is a Natural Monument surrounded on both sides by impressive rocks formations carved out by nature. Take a ride on a sightseeing boat where you can leisurely admire the wonderous rock formations pointed out by the boatman as you sail down the emerald river.
You can admire Oboke Gorge and more of Shikoku’s fabulous natural scenery from a different angle next on the Shikoku Mannaka Sennen Monogatari. A luxurious sightseeing train that brings you through the area, take in the scenery of fields, mountains, rivers and more as they pass by your window. Each car of the train is decorated to reflect a different season and designed to encompass the homeliness of an old Japanese house. Savour a specially curated Yusan-hako lunchbox as you roll through the landscape, reminiscent of the wooden lunchboxes children used to carry, but upgraded into an ‘adult’ version full of local ingredients and accompanied by sake.
Day 04 (Fri, 17 May’19)
Nakatado – Takamatsu – Nakatado
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Asan Kotonami (Private Hot Spring) or similar
The most famous attraction in Takamatsu, Ritsurin Garden is a Place of Scenic Beauty considered by some to be one of the best gardens in in Japan. The large garden consists of a Japanese and Western style garden, filled with ponds, pavilions and carefully curated landscapes against the borrowed scenery of Mt Shiun in the background. With so many varied elements, it is said that the scenery changes with every step as you stroll around the garden.
Kotohiragu Shrine, also known as Konpirasan, is the main Kotohira shrine dedicated to the god of the sea. Sitting on Mt Zozu, reaching the shrine requires climbing 1,368 stone steps, but this has not deterred the many visitors and pilgrims that come here every day to pray for blessings and be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Sanuki Plain. For those not inclined to go all the way to the top, there are many shops and restaurants along the way to keep you occupied.
Day 05 (Sat, 18 May’19)
Nakatado – Okayama – Osaka
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: The Ritz-Carlton Osaka or similar
Head out to Kurashiki this morning, a town reminiscent of a bygone era. A former rice distribution centre, Kurashiki, literally “town of storehouses”, was centred around a system of canals with storehouses and merchant houses on either side. The Edo period storehouses have now been converted into museums, boutiques and cafes, while the willow tree-lined canal and stone bridges make the area extremely picturesque.
One of the three best landscape gardens in Japan, Korakuen is an exquisite garden located just beside Okayama Castle. Built in 1687 as a place for entertainment for the ruling family, the garden was opened to the public at the end of the feudal era. Stroll around this gorgeous garden with atypical features like spacious lawns and tea and rice fields.
In the afternoon, head to the big city on a bullet train to Osaka.
