Hokkaido is well known for salmon and at the Chitose Aquarium located right at the Chitose River, you can see wild salmon swimming upstream through a special observation tank in the river itself. During the salmon migration, you can also see salmon being collected by a large Indian water wheel at the aquarium, numbering up to 30,000 fish a day at its peak!
Following that, stop by at Lake Shikotsu to enjoy scenic views around the second deepest lake in Japan. This caldera lake’s crystal-clear waters often act as a mirror reflecting the mountains that surround it. Take a relaxing stroll along its shores and bask in the peaceful nature scenes.
Stopping by at the Noboribetsu Hell Valley, you can see the source of Noboribetsu’s hot spring waters which you will get to enjoy tonight. With patches of barren landscape, clouds of steam spouting from vents, flowing streams of hot spring water and the heavy smell of sulphur permeating the air, it is not difficult to understand why this place is called “hell valley”.
Day 02 (Sat, 14 Sep’19)
Noboribetsu – Rusutsu
(Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Rusutsu Resort (hot spring) or similar
At the tip of the Etomo Peninsula, Cape Chikyu is a scenic cape where you can feel the roundness of the earth. Looking out at the endless sea from the observatory, this is one of the few places where you can observe a slight curve in the horizon.
Born from an earthquake during the second world war, Showa Shinzan is a considerably new mountain that was kept a secret for years as it was considered a bad omen during the war. Now, the 398m high mountain next to Mt Usu in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park is a well-known active volcano that continues to emit sulphurous fumes. Taking the Mt Usu ropeway, you will be able to get a fantastic view of the mountain and nearby Lake Toya.
Drop by one of Hokkaido’s many fruit farms and pick some seasonal fruits! As the seasons change, you may find more than one kind of fruit available to you here. Pick plump grapes from their vines, or crisp apples from their branches. Whatever the fruit, there is no better way to enjoy it than fresh from the farm!
Round off the day with a sweet treat and view of Hokkaido’s Fuji, Mt Yotei, at Lake Hill Farm, a gelato shop and restaurant on a small hill. Serving up 20 varieties of gelato made using milk from the farm itself, try the seasonal flavours made using locally produced fruits and vegetables.

Arguably the most beautiful of the many marshes and ponds around the Niseko Mountains, Shinsen Marsh is located on a plateau 750m above sea level. Taking a boardwalk through pathways of grass, birch, pine trees and other plants, the refreshing sight of the beautiful marsh opens out before you, reflecting the surroundings in its clear water.
Take in the wonderful scenic views at Cape Kamui, located on the beautiful Shakotan Peninsula. The picturesque rugged coast of the cape is breath-taking against the crystal-clear water in the shade of “Shakotan blue”
Established by the ‘father of Japanese whisky’, the Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery was built at a site chosen for its clean air and water and mountainous surroundings similar to the Scottish Highlands. Still making whisky the traditional way using coal-fire distillation, visitors here can learn about the distillation process, and sample some of their fine whiskeys.
Head to Otaru next and spend some time wandering round its quaint streets. A former major herring centre and the terminal station for Hokkaido’s first railroad, the charming buildings that line the streets now house whimsical music box museums, patisseries selling mouth-watering creations, and intricate glassware ornaments. Also worth checking out is Otaru’s sushi street, where only the freshest seafood makes it to the menu in every sushi restaurant along the row.
