Day 01

Start your trip right with a delicious meal of barbequed meats at the cosy Log House Wagyu Bibi Restaurant. Feast on juicy, tender wagyu beef and more at this table barbeque restaurant, guaranteed to satisfy your taste buds.
 
Hokkaido is well known for salmon and at the Chitose Aquarium located right at the Chitose River, you can see wild salmon swimming upstream through a special observation tank in the river itself. During the salmon migration, you can also see salmon being collected by a large Indian water wheel at the aquarium, numbering up to 30,000 fish a day!
 
Following that, stop by at Lake Shikotsu to enjoy scenic views around the second deepest lake in Japan. This caldera lake’s crystal-clear waters often act as a mirror reflecting the mountains that surround it. Take a relaxing stroll along its shores and bask in the vibrant autumn leaves of the trees around it.

Day 02
Noboribetsu – Hakodate

Take in the sights at Onuma Quasi-National Park this morning. Selected as one of Japan’s New Three Best Views, the sight of Mt Komagatake reflected on the still waters of the lake on a clear day is sure to take your breath away. This is all the more so when the surrounding trees are awash in the red and yellow hues of this season.
 
Stopping by at the Hokkaido Konbukan, a museum dedicated to kelp, you can learn all about how this versatile marine plant is farmed and processed, and even see the making of shredded konbu. Try all kinds of kelp products here, from kelp tea and rice toppings to kelp candy and even kelp soft serve!
 
Next, explore the historical harbour of Hakodate Bay. The red brick former warehouses that line the bay have been converted into shops, restaurants and museums which one can easily spend an afternoon wandering around.
 
As the sun sets, take a ride up Mt Hakodate on the Hakodate Ropeway to see one of the three best night views in the world! Enjoy the aerial views of the bay and colourful trees covering the mountain on your way to the breath-taking panorama from the top.

Day 03
Hakodate – Lake Toya

Start your morning with a trip to the Hakodate Morning Market. Over 250 shops and restaurants offer fresh seafood, vegetables, fruits, and souvenirs at this lively market. Have a seafood rice bowl – freshly caught seafood over steaming hot rice, for breakfast at one of the restaurants for the perfect start to the day.
 
After a full breakfast, take a stroll around the sloping streets of Motomachi, the former foreign settlement area. The historical buildings here bear testament to the varied backgrounds of their builders with old churches and consulates creating a picturesque landscape.

Day 04
Lake Toya

Start off today with a soba making experience! One of Japan’s signature noodles, learn the steps involved in making good soba noodles from scratch. The effort spent in making the noodles will only increase your enjoyment of consuming your handiwork afterwards!
 
Taking advantage of the autumn harvest season, go apple picking at one of Hokkaido’s many fruit farms! Choose your perfect, crisp Hokkaido apple from the trees and eat it at its best, right in the orchard itself!
 
Located in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park is Mt Usu, an active volcano that stands at 737 metres high. Take the Mt Usu Ropeway up the side of the mountain for a panoramic view of the spectacular autumn foliage-covered mountain and surrounding landscapes, along with neighbouring Showa Shinzan and Lake Toya.
 
Round off the day with a sweet treat and view of Hokkaido’s Fuji, Mt Yotei, at Lake Hill Farm, a gelato shop and restaurant on a small hill. Serving up 20 varieties of gelato made using milk from the farm itself, try the seasonal flavours made using locally produced fruits and vegetables.

Day 05
Lake Toya – Sapporo

Hoheikyo Dam is a beautiful arched dam surrounded by primeval forest that can only be accessed by riding an electric bus through a one kilometre tunnel. This place is rich with stunning scenery and especially popular for autumn foliage viewing. Vibrant reds and yellows of the season create
a wonderful juxtaposition against the sombre grey concrete that can be viewed through gaps in the dam wall.
 
Head to Otaru next and spend the afternoon wandering round its quaint streets. A former major herring centre and the terminal station for Hokkaido’s first railroad, the charming buildings that line the streets now house whimsical music box museums, patisseries selling mouth-watering creations, and intricate glassware ornaments. Also worth checking out is Otaru’s sushi street, where only the freshest seafood makes it to the menu in every sushi restaurant along the row.
