Day 03 (Wed, 05 Oct'22)
Mt Kurodake is one of the earliest places to welcome autumn colours in Japan. Taking the Kurodake Ropeway this morning, you can see the colourful trees covering the mountain and a spectacular view of the gorge below. At Sounkyo Gorge, see the silvery thin rivulets of Ginga and the powerful burst of Ryusei as the characteristic waterfalls thunder 90m down a rocky cliff.
Stop by Mt Iou, an active volcano peppered with vents emitting plumes of smoke and sulphur and marvel at its unique barren landscape dotted with yellow. Next, visit one of the clearest lakes in the world, Lake Mashu, and enjoy spectacular views of the clear water and surrounding sheer cliffs that can be seen from the observatory.
Day 05 (Fri, 07 Oct'22)
Hotel: Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga (Hot Spring) or similar
Take a sightseeing cruise out onto Lake Akan today and leisurely admire the scenic surrounds. The cruise makes a stop at Churui Island in the middle of the lake, where you can see and learn about the native marimo, moss balls which can only be found in a few lakes around the world.
Known as the five-coloured lake, Lake Onneto was formed by the eruption of Mt. Meakan and boasts impressive waters which change colour from shades of blues to greens depending on sunlight and temperature. Next, head to Ikeda Wine Castle, a winery housed in a building resembling an old European castle, to learn about the unique winemaking process and sample some local Tokachi wine.
Take in the sights at Onuma Quasi-National Park this morning. Selected as one of Japan’s New Three Best Views, the sight of Mt Komagatake reflected on the still waters of the lake on a clear day is sure to take your breath away.
The unique star-shaped, western-style citadel of Fort Goryokaku was built during the Edo Period and now serves as a public park. Ascending the Goryokaku Tower next to it, get an aerial view of the fort along with panoramic views of Hakodate and its surrounds.
Take part in a special Hakodate Activity today! The gateway of Hokkaido and one of the first places in Japan to open to international trade, Hakodate has a unique history which melds Japanese, foreign and native Ainu influences. Connect with some of the locals here and experience their hospitality!
Before heading up to Rusutsu, take a trip to the Hakodate Morning Market. Over 250 shops and restaurants offer fresh seafood, vegetables, fruits, and souvenirs at this lively market. Try some of the specialties such as fresh sashimi from squid which you catch yourself!
Visit the Shikotsu-Toya National Park to see Mt Usu, an active volcano that stands at 737m high. Take the Mt Usu Ropeway up the mountain for a panoramic view of the spectacular landscapes, along with neighbouring Showa Shinzan and Lake Toya. Later, go apple picking at one of Hokkaido’s many fruit farms and enjoy the fruit at its best, right in the orchard itself!
Take a walk at Shinsen Marsh, located on a plateau 750m above sea level. It encompasses a variety of flora coloured by the season, which reflect spectacularly on its clear water, making it one of the most beautiful marshes in the area. Tour Otaru next, famous for its sushi street, charming buildings, whimsical music box museums and delectable desserts. Spend some time exploring the historical streets of Hokkaido’s former major herring centre and terminal station for Hokkaido’s first railroad.
