At Farm Tomita, the flower fields with their autumn blooms of cleome and cosmos are a lovely sight to behold, even without lavender gracing its fields. Framed by the Tokachi Mountain Range in the distance, the rows of flowers resemble colourful brush strokes on the hills. A short distance away, there is a rather surreal looking place in the woods near Mt Tokachi, that MacBook owners will find strangely familiar. The sight of the azure blue water in Biei Blue Pond juxtaposed with the sombre grey of the once-living Silver birch and Japanese larch trees is an extraordinarily mesmerizing one, which may in part explain the hordes of photographers it attracts. Shikisai no Oka, as its name suggests is about the colours of the seasons. With 15 hectares of land, it is a vast area where you can admire Nature's floral ornaments line the gently rolling hills and fill the air with a lovely fragrance.

Asahikawa – Abashiri

Autumn is the season when Mother Nature, with a wave of her hand, adds splashes of reddish yellow and orange to all the greenery. In Japan, this usually begins at Daisetsuzan National Park, the largest national park in the country. This magical blending of colours materialise in a slow, downward cascade at Mt Kurodake, the jewel in the crown of Daisetsuzan National Park. It is a 1,984 meter peak that you can easily access seven-tenth of the way, by means of the Kurodake Ropeway. Starting from early September, it takes slightly more than a month for the autumn colours to make their way from the top of Mt Kurodake to the ropeway station at the foothills of the mountain. Shaped by Ishikawa River's relentless path through the Daisetsuzan mountain range, Sounkyo is one of Japan’s largest canyons. Over there, Ginga no Taki (Milky Way Falls) & Ryusei no Taki (Shooting Star Falls) are the twin standouts amongst the many waterfalls and affectionately termed "husband and wife" waterfalls by the locals!

Abashiri – Shiretoko

Lake Mashu is known as "Kamuy-tou" to the Ainu people, which means the "Lake of the Gods" in the Ainu language. A caldera lake, this top contender for the honour of "Clearest Lake in the World" is dominated by sheer cliffs of more than 300 meters in height. Being infamously and frequently blanketed in heavy fog around the lake certainly adds to its mystique! In the Japanese language, iou means sulphur and the aptly named Mt Iou has more than 1500 fumaroles vents through which hot sulphurous gases emerge. Do remember to try the steamed eggs heated by fumes!

Day 05

Shiretoko – Lake Akan

Today you will be exploring the Shiretoko National Park with its soaring mountain peaks adorned in their autumn mantle. The key attraction of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Shiretoko Five Lakes. Formed long ago by the eruption of Mt Iou, these five lakes look whimsically like a god’s handprint. A 800 metres long, elevated wooden broadwalk was built to serve a dual purpose: firstly to give visitors easy access to the first lake without damaging the fragile ecosystem. Secondly, to let visitors enjoy views of the sea of Okhotsk and the majestic mountains without having to worry about bears! Later in the evening, you can learn about the Ainu – indigenous people of Hokkaido – over at the Ainu Kotan, a few steps from your hotel. Here, you can experience the ancient culture of the Ainu from their intricate handicraft to their traditional music and dance performances.

Day 06

Lake Akan – Tokachigawa

Lake Onneto, or "old, large lake" in Ainu language, was created when the river was dammed up after the volcanic eruption of Meakan-dake. With colours that change from a deep azure to stunning jade depending on season, weather and time of the day, it is also known as ‘Goshikinuma’ – lake of 5 colours. When in Tokachi, there are two things that you definitely need to try. First is their Butadon – succulent smoky pieces of grilled pork atop steaming rice. So enticing is the Butadon here that locals can drive for over 2 hours just to have it! Second would be the unique moor hotspring in Tokachi. Touted as "Bijin no Yu" or the Hot spring of Beauty, the moisturizing effects of this hotspring can be enjoyed in only two places in the world! So for tonight, feel all your worries and stress melt away as you soak in the wonderful benefits of the hotspring.

Day 07

Tokachigawa – Sapporo
