Later, stroll along the shores of Lake Shikotsu right outside your hotel to enjoy scenic views around the second deepest lake in Japan. This caldera lake’s crystal-clear waters often act as a mirror reflecting the mountains that surround it. Take a relaxing stroll along the lake and its accompanying town filled with shops and food stalls, and bask in the vibrant autumn leaves of the trees around it.
Day 02 (Tue, 15 Oct’19)
Chitose – Niseko
(Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Kanro no Mori (hot spring) or similar
Drop by one of Hokkaido’s many fruit farms and pick some seasonal fruits! As the seasons change, you may find more than one kind of fruit available to you here. Pick plump grapes from their vines, or crisp apples from their branches. Whatever the fruit, there is no better way to enjoy it than fresh from the farm!
Have a sweet treat and view of Hokkaido’s Fuji, Mt Yotei, at Lake Hill Farm, a gelato shop and restaurant on a small hill. Serving up 20 varieties of gelato made using milk from the farm itself, try the seasonal flavours made using locally produced fruits and vegetables.
Visit Fukidashi Park and sample the sweet spring water that flows down from Mt. Yotei, Hokkaido’s Mt. Fuji. Nestled at the foot of the mountain, 80,000 tons of water filtered down from the peak gushes out each day. Don’t forget to do as the locals do and bring an empty bottle to collect some of it!
Day 03 (Wed, 16 Oct’19)
Niseko – Asarigawa Onsen
(Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Otaru Asari Classe Hotel (hot spring) or similar
Driving round the scenic Niseko Panorama Line, drop by Shinsen Marsh, arguably the most beautiful of the many marshes and ponds around the Niseko Mountains, located on a plateau 750m above sea level. Taking a boardwalk through pathways of grass, birch, pine trees and other plants, the refreshing sight of the beautiful marsh opens out before you, reflecting the surroundings in its clear water.
As you head along the coastal roads of the beautiful Shakotan Peninsula later, make a stop at Cape Kamui to take in its spectacular views of the magnificent cliffs jutting out into the sea. The picturesque rugged coast of the cape is breath-taking against the crystal-clear water in the shade of “Shakotan blue”
Head to Otaru next and spend some time wandering round its quaint streets. A former major herring centre and the terminal station for Hokkaido’s first railroad, the charming buildings that line the streets now house whimsical music box museums, patisseries selling mouth-watering creations, and intricate glassware ornaments. Also worth checking out is Otaru’s sushi street, where only the freshest seafood makes it to the menu in every sushi restaurant along the row.
Day 04 (Thu, 17 Oct’19)
Asarigawa Onsen – Sapporo
(Breakfast/-/-)
Hotel: Keio Plaza Hotel Sapporo or similar
Hoheikyo Dam is a beautiful arched dam surrounded by primeval forest that can only be accessed by riding an electric bus through a one kilometre tunnel. This place is rich with stunning scenery and especially popular for autumn foliage viewing. Vibrant reds and yellows of the season create a wonderful juxtaposition against the sombre grey concrete that can be viewed through gaps in the dam wall.
The setting for the 1972 Winter Olympics, the Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium has been hosting many ski events and competitions since. When it is not used for events, a ride on the chair lift will bring you a fantastic view of Sapporo from the top of the ski jump. At its foot, the Sapporo Winter Sports Museum is where you can find out about the 1972 Olympics and different types of winter sports. There are also simulation games where you can experience ski jumping, bob sledding and ice skating.
Day 05 (Fri, 18 Oct’19)

This morning, visit the Sapporo Curb Market, a collection of nearly 80 stores outside Sapporo’s central wholesale market. Specialising in seafood, and you can get some of the freshest ones here. Try some of the seasonal offerings from the various stalls and pick up some Hokkaido souvenirs.
Enjoy some outdoor activities at the Takino Suzuran Hillside Park, a sprawling park of almost 400 hectares that is home to a wide variety of plant species, waterfalls and wildlife. Observe the animals in their natural habitats, stroll around the gardens, or try out some activities like cycling, fishing and park golf.
Indulge in the plethora of shopping and dining options in Sapporo City! As Japan’s fifth largest city, Sapporo has developed rapidly into a bustling metropolis. Options for shopping are abundant, both above and underground, with multi-storey department stores such as Daimaru and Esta lining the streets, and a network of stores offering souvenirs, apparel, footwear, cosmetics, electronics, and more, underground.
