Hotel: New Furano Prince Hotel (Hot Spring) or similar
(Car pick up at Chitose Airport Toyota Branch)
Rolling pastoral landscape under sunny blue skies is one of the key images that comes to mind when Hokkaido is mentioned. In recent years, many farms have started their own restaurants on site by showcasing their own local products and stunning scenery. Over at Kacha Ice Cream & Restaurant, homemade ice cream using seasonal produce and dairy products from their own farm are the highlights. Nestled amidst stunning nature, Lake Kanayama is a good place to spend your afternoon. The bright purple of Lavender and soothing scent carried on the summer breeze combines to form an indelible image of true summer in Hokkaido.
Day 02
Furano – Asahikawa
(C: B/L/D) . (D: B/-/-)
Hotel: C: Asahikawa Grand Hotel; D: JR Inn Asahikawa or similar
This morning, you will head off towards the highlight of this tour – Farm Tomita. The image of rows of flowers carpeting the rolling hills of Farm Tomita like a rainbow stretching as far as the eye can see was probably the picture that propelled Hokkaido into worldwide popularity. You will get the chance to see, smell and experience it for yourself today! Although the next garden that you will visit literally translates to the Hill of Four Season, summer has to be the best time to be at Shikisai no Oka. Featuring rainbow-coloured flowers coaxed to bloom by the summer heat amidst the gently-rolling hills of Biei, you can fully appreciate the grand nature of Hokkaido today. Besides bringing on the blooming of gorgeous flowers to Hokkaido, the heat of the summer days also bring about ripening fruits. Do remember to give the famous Yubari melons a try! You can enjoy it on its own, or with a scoop of delicious vanilla soft cream – the signature Hokkaido dessert in Summer.
Day 03
Asahikawa – Abashiri
(C: B/L/D) . (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: C: Hokuten no Oka (Hot Spring); D: Abashiri Koso (Hot Spring) or similar
Venturing out into the country region, you will go through some of Hokkaido’s most stunning scenery. Stretching over 24 kilometers, bordered by over 100 meters high steep unforgiving cliffs and dotted with waterfalls, the Sounkyo Gorge is the centerpiece of the Daisetsu-zan National Park. Out of all the waterfalls, the Ginga & Ryusei are not to be missed. You can get up close to these dynamic waterfalls as you follow the path through the jeweled green foliage growing alongside the waterfalls. Enroute to Abashiri, you will stop by Cha Cha World. With a vast collection of wooden toys from all over the world and over decades, you will feel as though you have stepped back into your childhood days. See if you can spot any of the toys from your past! Another sight not to be missed here is the Shadow Art display by master shadown artist Seiji Fujishiro.
Day 04
Abashiri – Shiretoko
(C: B/L/D) . (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: Shiretoko Grand Hotel (Hot Spring) or similar
Hokkaido is well-known for the beauty of its landscapes, from the sight of staggering waterfalls to that of Lake Mashu, a caldera lake with one of the world’s clearest waters and dominated by sheer cliffs of over 300 metres. You can usually smell the next place of interest before you see it clearly. Mt Iou, called Atosanupuri in the Ainu language which literally translates to ‘Naked Mountain’, is an active volcano peppered with vents emitted plumes of smoke and sulphur.
Day 05
Shiretoko – Lake Akan
(C: B/L/D) . (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: C: Akan Tsuruga Yuku no Sato Rera Wing (Hot Spring); D: Akan Tsuruga Wings (Hot Spring) or similar
Hokkaido is well-known for the beauty of its landscapes and Shiretoko is one of the last pristine wilderness left in Japan. One of the crown jewels of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Shiretoko Five Lakes. Formed long ago by volcanic eruption, these five lakes look whimsically like a god’s handprint. To protect the fragile ecosystem of the surrounding virgin forest, an 800-metre, wooden elevated boardwalk was built to allow you to enjoy views of the Shiretoko First Lake, Sea of Okhotsk, and soaring mountains. From Shiretoko to Lake Akan, you will take the Shiretoko Pass. At 728 metres above sea level, this is exceptionally beautiful in autumn when Mt Rausu is tinted with the hues of autumn. At this end of the mountainous drive is one of the best places in the whole of Hokkaido to come for fresh seafood – Jun no Banya! Hidden beneath the humble exterior of a wooden hut is a small and intimate family-owned restaurant where ‘fresh’ is the keyword of the day. Sashimi from the catch of the day, cod fish steamed in soy sauce that showcases the sweetness of the fish, just-caught crabs with their delicate flesh are all waiting for the seafood lovers!
Day 06
Lake Akan – Tokachigawa
(C: B/L/D) . (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: Tokachigawa Onsen Daiichi Hotel (Hot Spring) or similar
Lake Onneto is first up today and its water changes colour depending on sunlight and temperature, going from a gleaming bottle green to a deep azure. When in Tokachi, there are two things that you definitely need to try. First is their Butadon – succulent smoky pieces of grilled pork atop steaming fragrant rice. So famous is the Butadon in Tokachi that the locals can drive for over 2 hours just to have this dish. Secondly is the unique moor hotspring in Tokachi. Touted as the Hot Spring of Beauty, the moisturizing effect of this hotspring can only be enjoyed in 2 places in the world. One here in Tokachi and another in Germany. So for tonight, let all your worries and stress melt away as you soak in the wonderful benefits of the hotspring.
Day 07
Tokachigawa – Otaru – Sapporo
(C: B/L/D) . (D: B/-/-)
Hotel: JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo or similar
Before going to Sapporo today, you will spend some time in Otaru. Firstly for lunch is a truly Hokkaido meal of sushi. Otaru is famous for its sushi street that houses unpretentious sushi restaurants with only the freshest seafood as their ingredients. With a rich history that dates back to its early days as a major herring centre and the terminal station for Hokkaido’s first railroad, Otaru’s charming buildings now houses whimsical music box museums, patisseries with absolutely-tempting cream puffs and also those selling intricate glassware ornaments.
