Begin your day by admiring some fresh flowers at Farm Tomita! Although the farm is famed for lavender, autumn brings around blooming cleome and cosmos flowers that light up the landscape. Enjoy the cheery flowers against the magnificent backdrop of the Tokachi Mountain Range.
Bringing you even more flowers are the gently rolling hills of Shikisai no Oka, the “Hill of Four Seasons”. The vast expanse of flower fields spreads across an area equivalent to three Tokyo Domes and showcases flowers like kochia and poppies in autumn.
An internationally renowned sake brand, Otokoyama Sake Brewery has a long history in making top rate sake. Housing a brewery, museum and garden in its complex, get an up-close view of the brewing process and see artefacts used in sake brewing long ago. Sample some of the sake and buy your favourites home!
Day 03
Sounkyo – Abashiri
Drive: (Breakfast/-/Dinner) • Coach: (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hokuten no Oka Lake Abashiri Tsuruga Resort (Hot Spring) or similar
Autumn colours start from early September at Mt Kurodake, making it one of the earliest places to welcome the season. Over a month, the colours slowly spread down the mountain, covering it with fiery red trees. Taking the Kurodake Ropeway up the mountain this morning, you will get to see the colourful trees covering the mountain, and a spectacular view of the gorge below.
Nestled in the Sounkyo Gorge, the twin waterfalls of Ginga & Ryusei are among the best 100 waterfalls in Japan. Often referred to as husband-and-wife falls, the silvery thin rivulets of Ginga and powerful burst of Ryusei give each a distinct character. The sight of the waterfalls thundering down a 90 metre rocky cliff flanked by bright autumn leaves is an unforgettable sight.
Day 04
Abashiri – Shiretoko
Drive: (Breakfast/-/Dinner) • Coach: (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Shiretoko Grand Hotel Kitakobushi (Hot Spring) or similar
The 3.5-hectare flower garden Hana Tento is home to over 45,000 flowers that spread across its grounds. The wide spread of colour coordinated flower fields make a lovely picture when the flowers are in bloom.
Continuing your journey on the Bihoro Pass, stop by at the viewing spot located on the western side of Lake Kussharo. From the 525m high observatory, you can take in impressive panoramic views of Lake Kussharo and its islands below.
Next, visit one of the clearest lakes in the world, Lake Mashu, known as “Kamuy-tou” in the Ainu language, meaning “Lake of the Gods”. This name comes as no surprise given the spectacular views of the clear water and surrounding sheer cliffs that can be seen from the observatory.
Another one of Japan’s 100 best waterfalls, Oshinkoshin Waterfall is a spectacular waterfall next to a coastal road. It is also known as “Twin Beauties Waterfall” as its stream splits into two partway down the approximately 80m drop. Climb the stairs next to the falls to get up close to this powerful waterfall.

Shiretoko – Akan
Drive: (Breakfast/-/Dinner) • Coach: (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Lake Akan Tsuruga Wings (Hot Spring) or similar

Get right into nature by walking round the lakes on an elevated boardwalk used to protect the fragile ecosystems. On your walk, you can enjoy views of the lake, Sea of Okhotsk and surrounding mountains, all covered in autumnal glory.
As we leave the lakes, we will drive along the Shiretoko Pass, one of the top three scenic driving routes in Japan. This 738m high pass connects Rausu and Shari and provides splendid views of Mt. Rausu, Shiretoko’s highest mountain, and Kunashiri Island along the way.
Have some delicious yoghurt gelato at La Laiterie Nakashibetsu to round off the day! Nakashibetsu is known for dairy products and those sold at La Laiterie use fresh milk free of additives. You can try a range of ice creams, yoghurt drinks, and even cheese at this shop.
