When in Hokkaido, you have got to try the local sushi at least once. Hokkaido is a treasure trove of seafood thanks to its location in the middle of three oceans with differing currents, including the Sea of Japan, Pacific Ocean and Okhotsk Sea. In contrast to Tokyo’s Edo-mae sushi which is preserved with vinegar or soy sauce, Hokkaido-style sushi offers an amazing fresh-from-the-sea taste and is known as Ezo-mae sushi. With 12 carefully selected pieces of Ezo-mae sushi, you will get the perfect taste of freshness that only Hokkaido can offer.
Not many people would associate Japan with world class whiskey but that is exactly what you will find in the small town of Yoichi. Founded in 1934 the Nikka Yoichi distillery offer tours, tastings and a brilliant insight into the history of whiskey making in Japan. At its sampling section, you will have a chance to taste some of its brews too. Non-whisky drinkers may want to try their Apple wine, strong in alcohol content but surprisingly good.

Rusutsu – Sapporo
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Keio Plaza Hotel Sapporo or similar
Start the day at Fukidashi Park and sample the sweet spring water that flows down from Mt. Yotei, Hokkaido’s Mt. Fuji. Nestled at the foot of the mountain, 80,000 tons of water filtered down from the peak gushes out each day. Don’t forget to do as the locals do and bring an empty bottle to collect some of it!
Head to Otaru next and spend the afternoon wandering round its quaint streets. A former major herring centre and the terminal station for Hokkaido’s first railroad, the charming buildings that line the streets now house whimsical music box museums, patisseries selling mouth-watering creations, and intricate glassware ornaments.
