Day 00 (Mon, 11 Jun)
Assemble at Singapore Changi Airport for flight to Tokyo.
Day 01 (Tue, 12 Jun)
Singapore – Haneda - Chitose
(D: -/-/-)
Hotel: ANA Crowne Plaza Chitose or similar
(Pick up car at Toyota Chitose Poplar Branch)
Yuni Garden is the largest herb garden in Japan that comes complete with old manors and long vistas. With thoughtful landscaping presenting a well-manicured, English-style garden, it contains 230 kinds of herbs in 10 gardens and flowers that bloom in each season. The garden also encompasses a farmer’s market where you can buy fresh produce, and a restaurant where you can savour mouth-watering food cooked with herbs grown in the garden.
After lunch, take a leisurely cruise down Bibi River in the Bibi River Canoe Experience. Paddle through the Yufutsu Plains where some 270 species of birds reside and see how many you can spot! Bask in the tranquillity of nature as you meander down the river accompanied by birdsongs and fish swimming by.
Alternatively, shop to your heart’s content at Chitose Outlet Mall Rera. Home to over 400 brands ranging from fashion to toys to household products, Hokkaido’s first large scale outlet mall is the perfect place for a shopping spree!
Day 02 (Wed, 13 Jun)
Chitose – Sapporo
(D: Breakfast/-/-)
Hotel: Sapporo Tokyu REI Hotel or similar
A little orange shop sitting in a blueberry farm, Gelateria Mirtillo marries the taste of Hokkaido milk and cream with Italian gelato to offer a taste of both worlds. Organic blueberries from the farm are used to make four different kinds of blueberry flavoured gelatos that are the signatures of the shop.
On your drive, stop by at Hana Road Eniwa, a beautiful roadside rest area. Open spaces and a water garden next to the Izari river provide nice surroundings for you to stretch your legs while a large conservatory, a people friendly greenhouse, gives you a place to rest. What makes this road stop unique is the large variety of produce that is on sale. Many locals visit this rest stop just to buy fresh fruit and vegetables, so be sure to pick some up for yourself!
Day 03 (Thur, 14 Jun)
Sapporo – Rusutsu
(D: Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Rusutsu Resort or similar
Option 1:
Head down to Otaru and spend the morning wandering round its quaint streets. A former major herring centre and the terminal station for Hokkaido’s first railroad, the charming buildings that line the streets now house whimsical box museums, patisseries selling mouth-watering creations, and intricate glassware ornaments. Also worth checking out is Otaru’s sushi street, where only the freshest seafood makes it to the menu in every sushi restaurant along the row.
Known at the Fuji of Hokkaido, you will find that Mt. Yotei often comes into view on your drive. You can admire the majestic mountain from many different places, one of which is Fukidashi Park. Nestled at the foot of Mt. Yotei, 80,000 tons of water filtered down from the mountain gushes out at this park each day. Sample the sweet spring water and do as the locals do by bringing an empty bottle to collect some of it!
Option 2:
Take a trip to Lake Shikotsu this morning to enjoy scenic views around the second deepest lake in Japan. This caldera lake’s crystal-clear waters often act as a mirror reflecting the mountains that surround it. Take a relaxing stroll along its shores, or paddle a canoe out into the lake, and surround yourself with the grandness of nature at this photogenic location. Another way to enjoy the lake is to take a boat cruise from Marukoma Onsen. Enjoy the surrounding views as you circle the lake, and marvel at the fish you can see through the clear waters and windows at the bottom of the boat.
Day 04 (Fri, 15 Jun)
Rusutsu
(D: Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Rusutsu Resort or similar
Engage in any of a plethora of activities available at the resort in an Activity Day! If the weather conditions are right, wake up bright and early to catch the sea of low-lying clouds roll over the hills below Mt. Yotei, a phenomenon known as ‘unkai’. Then spend the day rafting or canoeing at the river, or swimming at the pool, a mini water park with many slides. Outdoor lovers can choose to go hiking, biking, fishing, or even paragliding! Indoor activities such as bouldering, crafts and cooking are also available for the less adventurous, and there is always the on-site amusement park to entertain the whole family.
Day 05 (Sat, 16 Jun)
Rusutsu – Hakodate
(D: Breakfast/-/-)
Hotel: La Vista Hakodate Bay (hot spring) or similar
Try something new and sample White Oshiruko, a unique dessert only sold at a nondescript café next to Lake Toya. Typical oshiruko is a red bean soup, but this white version is made from Hokkaido milk and white kidney beans and served with mochi balls. A relatively unknown treat outside of the local community, it is something special to try on your trip.
Live out your equestrian dreams today with a horse riding experience at Paard Musee. Get a taste of life on a ranch as you visit the stables, learn to interact with the horses and try riding them against the backdrop of forests and Mt. Komagatake. You are also able to pat and feed the horses and other animals on the ranch, including ponies, goats and rabbits. A visit to the restaurant and shop is also a must to try their homemade products, such as maple syrup.
Day 06 (Sun, 17 Jun)
Hakodate
(D: Breakfast/-/-)
Hotel: La Vista Hakodate Bay (hot spring) or similar
Start your morning with a trip to the Hakodate Morning Market. Over 250 shops and restaurants offer fresh seafood, vegetables, fruits, and souvenirs at this lively market. Have a seafood rice bowl – freshly caught seafood over steaming hot rice, for breakfast at one of the restaurants for the perfect start to the day.
Fans of Muji will want to check out Share Star Hakodate. Recently opened in April 2017, this multi-storey complex houses a Muji megastore and café. However, what’s more notable is Share Star Kitchen, a Hakodate food market hall, in the building. Multiple shops selling delicious cuisine made with Hakodate ingredients are set in a food court style area, allowing you to try a variety of different foods.
Make a stop at the Future Center Hakodate for some interactive fun with technology. Created to instil a sense of wonder in children, there are multiple interactive activities to encourage learning through play. A huge media wall allows you to interact with the videos played and the 360 studio provides an all-round experience where you are in control. Just one floor up is also the Hakodate Kids Plaza, a play area catered to younger children.
In the evening, take in the Hakodate Ura Night View from a special viewing spot. Though the cityscape is more famously seen from Mt. Hakodate, you can now enjoy the view of the city and Mt. Hakodate from the ‘back side’. The scenery is no less spectacular, and with the added benefit of being less crowded.
Day 07 (Mon, 18 Jun)
Hakodate – Haneda – Singapore
(D: Breakfast/-/-)
Enjoy a free and easy day in Hakodate before your flight this evening. Pay a visit to the Hakodate Bay to see the historic red brick warehouses, now converted into unique shops and eateries. You can even take a rickshaw ride around the area for a different perspective and insights from knowledgeable rickshaw pullers. Or visit the Konbu Museum where you can find all manner of products related to kelp, including soup, candy, tea, and even kelp soft serve! Buy some quality konbu products here as souvenirs or for your own use. For lunch, pop into any one of the Lucky Pierrot stores for a taste you can only get in Hakodate. A popular burger chain with stores only in Hakodate, Lucky Pierrot has won awards for its famous burgers and is a must try when in the area.
