Departure date: 5 Dec, 2017 (Tue) Coach Tour
Day 00
Assemble at Singapore Changi Airport for direct flight to Hokkaido.
Day 01
Chitose – Asahikawa
(Coach: -/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Asahikawa Grand Hotel or similar
After an overnight flight, we will have a relaxing first day in Hokkaido. After a lunch of traditional soba kaiseki, we will head off to Takasago Sake Brewery. Housed in one of Asahikawa’s most traditional buildings, this brewery has withstood the test of time since it was built in 1909. Enter the low plaster-walled building and the antique posters and sake artefacts will surely give you the feeling of having stepped back in time. Return to the present with sake tasting of their dry and well-balanced, award-winning sake.
Day 02
Asahikawa – Lake Akan
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Akan Tsuruga Wings (Hot Spring) or similar
Although you are visiting Hokkaido in winter, the temperatures that you are encountering are just “the tip of the iceberg”. Over at Kamikawa Ice Pavilion, you can experience, fortunately for a few minutes only, Japan’s lowest ever recorded temperature of -41°C in the bitterly cold winter of 1902. In the afternoon, you can revisit your childhood days at Cha Cha World – the Museum of Worldwide Wooden Toys. Elaborate wooden block displays and old-fashioned wooden toys will delight children be they 3 or 80 years of age! Inside, you will find an incredible Shadow Art gallery by master shadow artist Seiji Fujishiro. Over 60 shadow pictures of varying sizes are displayed in a dark space, revealing the magical hues of the murals.
Day 03
Lake Akan – Kushiro – Lake Akan
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Akan Tsuruga Wings (Hot Spring) or similar
Visiting the city of Kushiro today, we will first make a stop at Washo Market. It is famous for its unique dish, “Katte-don”, a bowl of fragrant rice with your own selection of fresh seafood toppings. Get ready to be spoilt for choice as you browse the bewildering displays of sashimi. Friendly stall owners will be more than happy to show you what is in season. Once done, just find a seat and tuck in! Every winter, the red crowned cranes migrate to eastern Hokkaido to gather at winter feeding sites like the Akan International Crane Center. At this photographer's haven, watch the cranes move in a seemingly choreographed duet of graceful dips and jumps across the snow-covered fields. Come and learn all about these tall, graceful birds, at the only place in Japan dedicated to the preservation of these precious creatures.
Day 04
Lake Akan – Tokachigawa
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Tokachigawa Onsen Daiichi Hotel (Hot Spring) or similar
Hokkaido is renowned for its fertile farmlands and nowhere else is this demonstrated as clearly as in Tokachi. With the abundance of natural resources here, it should come as no surprise that this is also Japan’s “Candy Kingdom”. It is here that you will find Ryugetsu Sweetpia Garden, the factory of Hokkaido’s most popular sweets maker. Try its “Sanporoku” and you will understand why Hokkaido is also known for the delectability of its sweets. Another feature of Tokachi is its unique moor hotspring, with spring water derived from reed and other nature plants. Touted as "Bijin no Yu" or the Hot spring of Beauty, the moisturizing effects of this hotspring can only be enjoyed here or in Germany. So for tonight, let all your worries and stress melt away as you soak in the wonderful benefits of the hotspring.
Day 05
Tokachigawa
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Tokachigawa Onsen Daiichi Hotel (Hot Spring) or similar
Part of the rewards of traveling is getting to meet people from other countries and walks of life, people whose paths that would not ordinarily cross ours. For city dwellers, an encounter with the warm local community of Tokachi is a rare and welcome treat. On Tokachi Activity Day, you will be introduced to local pastoral sights and sounds in this very exclusive activity from Follow Me Japan.
Day 06
Tokachigawa Onsen – Sapporo
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Keio Plaza Hotel Sapporo or similar
This morning we head into Otaru, a city with its trademark canals and renowned for its glassworks, music boxes, and sweet shops lining its bustling Sakaimachi street. This perserved merchant street is a perfect place for a stroll, shopping and of course a treat of some of the freshest and tastiest seafood in all of Japan. Keep an eye out for a charming Western style building with a tower and you would have found LeTAO, short for "La Tour Amitie Otaru" or The Amiable tower of Otaru. With an impressive range of over 50 kinds of cakes and sweets, LeTAO's addictive cheescake is in such demand that special freezing methods had to be created to enable nationwide delivery. Wander over to the Otaru’s Music Box Museum and feel like a child in a toy store as you check out their eye-boggling array of 15,000 music boxes, ranging from matchbox sized souvenirs to precisely tuned masterpieces. All in all, it is a day well-spent in this pleasant port city!
Day 07
Sapporo
(Coach: Breakfast/-/-)
Hotel: Keio Plaza Hotel Sapporo or similar
On this day, you will have a full day on your own to explore Sapporo, a beautiful city with shopping in every direction. In December, the city hosts the annual Sapporo White Illumination festival, an event that features the artistic collaboration of nature and light with over 400,000 lights bulbs to herald the coming of the snow season. At its main site, the 1 .5km long Odori Park near our hotel, you will find the TV Tower, trees and structures all adorned with colourful light bulbs. The festival is astonishingly powered with renewable energy, including recycled cooking oil and solar panels specially designed to produce power even in the heaviest snow season. Wish for snow as the snow falling adds an extra tinge of mystique to the fantastic scene of Odori Park all lighted up. For best viewing, make your way to the TV Tower or alternatively, the JR Station Tower Observatory.
