Your first stop for this tour is a visit to Kamo Aquarium, home to the world’s largest collection of jellyfish. Backlit by colourful lights, the numerous species of jellyfish are without a doubt the stars of the aquarium and utterly mesmerizing to watch. For the adventurous, unique snacks such as jellyfish ice cream are sold as well.

This morning starts with a visit to the Homma Museum of Art. An art museum established in the post war era to lift the spirits of people through art and culture, the museum is now better known for its beautiful garden and Kyoto-style villa, creating a space where art, nature and history combine.
The ‘soul food of Yamagata’, Sakata Beika’s Oranda Senbei is a beloved rice cracker made from locally grown Shonai rice. At its headquarters, the Oranda Senbei Factory, you will learn and see how these rice crackers are made, from milling their own rice flour to baking and seasoning the final product, and of course, taste some freshly made Oranda Senbei for yourself!
Day 03 (Thu, 10 Apr’25)

Surround yourself with flowers this morning at Tsuruoka Park, one of Japan’s top 100 cherry blossom spots with 730 cherry trees of different varieties blooming in spring. Built on the site of the former Tsurugaoka Castle, the remains of castle walls, moats and ancient cedar trees add a touch of history to the seasonal blooms.
Indulge in a sweet treat later at Takahashi Fruit Land, a fruit farm and cafe which grows and sells a wide variety of fruits. Known for their fruit-themed desserts, make and enjoy your very own fruit parfait with seasonal fruits.
Day 04 (Fri, 11 Apr’25)

Step into the world of Japanese martial arts with an iaido experience today. An ancient sword art which emphasises both spiritual and physical awareness, iaido was developed at the Hayashizaki Iai Shrine and forms the basis of bushido, the code of honour of the samurai. Learn the history and concepts of iaido on a visit to the shrine before picking up a sword to learn the basic techniques of iaido for yourself.
Later, stop by one of Yamagata’s top cherry blossom viewing spots, Kajo Park, home to about 1,500 cherry blossom trees of 20 varieties. Built around the ruins of Yamagata Castle, one of the top 100 castles in Japan, the large park is now a popular public space located next to train tracks where passing trains can be seen with the flowers.
Day 05 (Sat, 12 Apr’25)

Travel down to the historic battleground of the Boshin War, Tsuruga Castle, also called Aizu-Wakamatsu Castle. Iconic for being the only castle in Japan with red roof tiles, the standout structure is not only a sight to see with its red roof rising above a cloud of pink cherry blossoms, but offers panoramic views of the city as well.
Goshikinuma is a set of lakes created by the eruption of Mt Bandai known for their mesmerising colours. Literally the ‘five coloured lakes’, the hue of the water changes from emerald to turquoise to teal depending on the season, time of day, and mineral composition of the water, creating a scene that is worth visiting many times over. Take a tranquil walk along a nature trail through the lakes and refresh yourself with the scenery that unfolds before you.

Aizuwakamatsu – Shibata

This morning, take a stroll round Shimizuen Garden, a Japanese garden which belonged to the former feudal ruler of Shibata. Sporting a large pond shaped in the calligraphy for the Chinese character for water, the beautiful garden recreates the eight sceneries of Omi and has many tea houses reminiscent of the town’s strong tea culture.
The Echigo plains are well known for having good conditions for sake brewing and this is where Aumont Sake Brewery has been producing exceptional sake for over 200 years. Using high quality locally grown rice and soft water from the Kaji river, combined with the expert skills of their brewers, Aumont’s sakes are known for their aroma and subtle flavours. Try some of their award winning sakes on a visit here and bring some home with you too!

Today, take the Mt Yahiko Ropeway and bask in the panoramic views from the mountaintop. The only place where you can look out onto the rice fields of the Niigata plains on one side and the Sea of Japan and Sado Island on the other, get a bird’s eye view of Niigata from here.
Tsubamesanjo has a long heritage of metalsmithing and is a major production centre for knives, cutlery and metalware, specialising in tsuiki, the art of hammer-forging. Visit the workshop of a master metalsmith to learn more about this traditional craft and take part in a tsuchime experience using metal hammering to decorate an original item.
Day 08 (Tue, 15 Apr’25)

Be treated to a culinary experience which engages all your senses at Tsubamesanjo Bit today. With a focus on Niigata’s bountiful food harvests, an engaging experience and top-notch hospitality, you will get to enjoy the tastes of Niigata presented in a unique 5D dining experience.
Stepping out into the Tsubamesanjo Jibasan Centre, you can find a huge variety of cutlery, houseware, and other metal ware, the specialty products of Tsubamesanjo. In addition, local specialities like sake, rice and confectionary are available, perfect for picking up some souvenirs of your trip.
