Arriving in Hokkaido today, begin your holiday by first admiring the beauty and grace of the Tancho, Japanese red crowned crane, at one of the sanctuaries dedicated to the conservation of these precious birds. Once thought to be extinct, these cranes migrate to feeding sites in east Hokkaido every winter where they can be seen ‘dancing’ with graceful dips and jumps on the snowy fields.

You will have a full day to enjoy the festivities at the Lake Akan Ice Festival! Held on the frozen surface of the lake each winter, there are activities such as ice carving, games, performances showcasing the Ainu culture and more to entertain you. Go snowmobiling or ride a banana boat for a thrill on the ice, or take it easy by ice fishing for smelt which is cooked up fresh for you. Each night also sees a spectacular display of fireworks decorating the clear winter sky, the perfect way to end the day.

Travel onwards today, taking a train through the idyllic snow-covered countryside of Hokkaido to your next destination at Lake Shikotsu, one of the deepest and clearest lakes in Japan.

Warm your tummies with a delicious lunch of barbequed meats at the cosy Log House Wagyu Bibi Restaurant. Feast on juicy, tender wagyu beef and more at this table barbeque restaurant, guaranteed to satisfy your taste buds.

Afterwards, spend the rest of the day at the Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival. Known for its pristine waters and depth of clarity, the clean water of the lake is used to create impressive ice sculptures such as towers, shrines and buildings that reflect a cool “Shikotsu blue” in winter. Admire the ice masterpieces and join in the many fringe activities available, from horse riding to ice sliding. In the evening, the ice sculptures are illuminated with colourful lights, creating a magical scene made possible only by the exceptional clarity of the ice.

This morning, visit the Sapporo Curb Market, a collection of nearly 80 stores outside Sapporo’s central wholesale market. Specialising in seafood, you can get some of the freshest ones here. Try some of the seasonal offerings from the various stalls and pick up some Hokkaido souvenirs.

Head to Otaru next and spend some time leisurely wandering its quaint streets and picturesque canal. A former major herring centre and the terminal station for Hokkaido’s first railroad, the charming buildings that line the streets now house whimsical music box museums, patisseries selling mouth-watering creations, and intricate glassware ornaments.

Winter is the season for Hokkaido’s King Crabs and you will get to feast on a full course crab kaiseki this evening! Savour succulent King Crab and other crab varieties in various dishes to enjoy the full range of flavours of this Hokkaido specialty.

Day 06 (Thu, 06 Feb'25)

Sapporo

You will have a free and easy day to catch the Sapporo Snow Festival and enjoy all that Sapporo has to offer! Held across three different sites in Sapporo City, about 250 snow and ice sculptures are waiting for you at Japan’s biggest snow festival. Over 100 of these can be seen at the main site at Odori Park just a short distance from your hotel where the International Snow Sculpture contest, ski jump competitions, ice skating and lots of delicious street food can be enjoyed.

You can also check out the Sapporo White illumination around the station in the evening, and lose yourself in the multitude of shopping options above and underground. After a day of activity, warm up with some Hokkaido food, like steaming bowls of Hokkaido’s signature miso ramen, soup curry, or Genghis Khan barbeque.
