Day 00

Make your way to Nagoya by train from Tokyo or Osaka, or on a direct flight from Singapore.

Day 01

Nagoya

(Car pick-up at Centrair Airport or Nagoya Station)

Begin your drive in Nagoya by visiting some of its many sights! See the gold-covered rooms of Nagoya Castle’s Honmaru Palace, drop by one of the largest planetariums in the world at the Science Museum, stroll through beautiful gardens like Tokugawa Garden, or dive into the technologies of Toyota at one of its museums. Don’t forget to eat your fill of Nagoya’s specialties like hitsumabushi eel rice and tebasaki chicken wings!

Day 02

Nagoya – Gero Onsen

Travel onwards to the town of Seki, known for its long history of exceptional blade-making. Pick up some quality kitchen knives and cutlery and learn a little more about Seki’s blade-making expertise which is recognised among the best in the world

Alternatively, travel over to the old post town of Magome, a picturesque rest stop along the Nakasendo route connecting Edo and Kyoto in the past, or drop by the scenic Ena Gorge where you can take a leisurely cruise through the seasonal sceneries of the valley.

Driving up to Gero Onsen for the night, explore the quaint hot spring town, have a relaxing soak in one of Japan’s top three hot springs and feast on a kaiseki dinner!

Day 03

Gero Onsen – Takayama

Hotel: TOKYU STAY Hida-Takayama Musubi-no-Yu (Hot Spring) or similar

As you drive up to Takayama, stop by Gujo Hachiman to stroll about the traditional townscape where pristine waters flow. The production centre of wax food samples commonly seen at restaurants, you can experience making one yourself here.

Go up further to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawago, a Japan bucket-list locale known for its unique straw-roofed houses made without nails and spectacular scenery surrounded by the Japan Alps.

Day 04

Takayama

(Breakfast/-/Dinner)

Hotel: TOKYU STAY Hida-Takayama Musubi-no-Yu (Hot Spring) or similar

Spend the day delving into the historical town of Takayama and discover its many charms. First, visit the Miyagawa Morning Market, one of the top three in Japan which has been running for hundreds of years. Discover local products, food and souvenirs, and be a part of the friendly atmosphere. Then, walk through the Old Town of well-preserved Edo-period merchant houses where rows of shops offer local wood crafts, sake, souvenirs, and plenty of snacks and local food like Hida beef sushi.

Day 05

Takayama – Asama Onsen

Hotel: KAI Matsumoto (Hot spring) or similar

Take a trip into the mountains at Kamikochi, the crown jewel of the Japan Alps, where magnificent mountains and sparkling river provide the perfect setting for a walk in nature. You can also get a different view of the mountains, including Japan’s third highest peak, by taking a ride up the double-decker Shinhotaka Ropeway bringing you up above the clouds.

Spend your last two nights in the comforts of KAI Matsumoto, a stylish ryokan located in Asama Onsen. Home to hot springs once enjoyed by feudal lords, immerse yourself in Japanese bathing culture with a variety of baths, saunas, and bathing methods to try. Then, feast on local specialties in a kaiseki meal which you can pair with an extensive collection of local Shinshu wines.

Day 06

Asama Onsen

Explore the scenic highlights of Nagano from the mystical Togakushi Shrine with its towering cedar trees, the historical and architectural beauty of Zenkoji Temple, or the preserved town of Obuse, known as the home of both ukiyo-e woodblock painter, Hokusai, and delicious chestnuts. Venture further and you can catch the iconic scene of Japan’s snow monkeys soaking in hot springs at the Jigokudani Monkey Park!

Day 07 and beyond

Asama Onsen – Nagano

For the last day of your journey, visit the fantastic sights in and around Matsumoto first by climbing to the top of historic Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s 12 original castles, with a view of the Japan Alps. Then, stop by the many charming shops along Nawate Street, and check-out the artworks at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art, featuring Matsumoto’s most famous artist, Yayoi Kusama. Wasabi lovers should also drop by Daio Wasabi Farm for some fresh wasabi and ice cream.

Your journey ends with a shinkansen ride to Tokyo on a first-class green seat, or you can extend your stay in Nagano to explore more of what the area has to offer!
