Shirahige Falls is the source of Biei’s famous Blue Pond. The name ‘shirahige’, meaning ‘white beard’, is a reference to the many small streams of groundwater that make up the waterfall. However, the water which cascades 30m down into the river below is, like the pond, a charming blue.
More often seen in pictures, you can see the real Shirogane Blue Pond for yourself today. The azure blue of the water is caused by its mineral composition and makes a fascinating sight juxtaposed against its sombre grey trees, dusted in a white coating of snow.
Considered one of Japan’s best furniture towns, Asahikawa’s bountiful forests of oak trees created a thriving industry for furniture manufacturers producing high-quality furniture. To appreciate the varied designs and workmanship of the furniture produced here, you will visit the Asahikawa Design Center, a home for furniture and crafts. Showcasing furniture from over 30 makers, the centre is a mix between showroom and museum, where furniture can be both admired and purchased.

Visit a couple of Hokkaido’s famed scenery spots this morning, first with a stop at the Christmas Tree of Biei. So named for its resemblance to a typical Christmas tree, some also suggest that its tip looks like a star. The solitary 8-metre-high spruce tree stands alone in an open field, making it extra picturesque amid a blanket of white snow. Next, head over to the Mild Seven Hills where you can find a small forest of larch trees lined up at the top. Made famous by a cigarette advertisement of the same name, this place has been widely used to showcase the beauty of Hokkaido.
Lunch today will be at Fratello Di Mikuni, a one-star Michelin restaurant located in the lush forests of Kamikawa. Savour delectable Italian fare created using fresh, local seasonal produce as you gaze out onto a panoramic view of the Daisetsu Mountain range from your seat.

This morning, witness the beauty and grace of the Tancho, Japanese red crowned crane, at one of the sanctuaries dedicated to the conservation of these precious birds. Once thought to be extinct, these cranes migrate to feeding sites in east Hokkaido every winter where they can be seen ‘dancing’ with graceful dips and jumps on the snowy fields.
Next, dig into some of Hokkaido’s bountiful seafood at Kushiro’s Washo Market. Try their famous “katte-don” a seafood rice bowl that you can customise. Browse the stalls and pick your favourite toppings from the selection of fresh seafood caught off the shores of Kushiro before tucking in!
If you would like to explore more this evening, just a short walk away from your accommodation is Akanko Ainu Kotan, an Ainu settlement where you can experience a bit of their culture. Here, you can find many traditional Ainu crafts which are considered iconic souvenirs of Hokkaido.
Day 05 (Tue, 06 Dec'22)

Get acquainted with the splendid nature surrounding Lake Akan as you go Snow Walking along its perimeter this morning. Walk through forested paths and fill your senses with the natural sights, sounds and scents of the refreshing primeval forest.
This evening, have a relaxing soak in the moor hot spring. Known as the hot spring of beauty, this therapeutic hot spring water is derived from plant matter and can only be found in two places in the world, in Germany and here in Tokachigawa. Enjoy this exceptional hot spring water from the comfort of your private hot spring bath in your room.

A free and easy day in Sapporo awaits you! As Japan’s fifth largest city, Sapporo has developed rapidly into a bustling metropolis. Options for shopping are abundant, both above and underground, with multi-storey department stores such as Daimaru and Esta lining the streets, and a network of stores offering souvenirs, apparel, footwear, cosmetics, electronics, and more, underground. When you are satisfied with your shopping spree, stop by at the Ramen Republic for a steaming bowl of Hokkaido’s signature miso ramen to complete your Hokkaido experience. In this season, you can also catch the beautiful Sapporo White Illumination lighting up central Sapporo in the evenings.
