Day 01
(C: -/L/D) . (D: -/-/-)
Hotel: Hilton Hotel Nagoya or similar
Arriving into Nagoya in the morning, you will stretch your legs with some activity at Hana Hiroba. Located in a region of warm climate, the vast fields here are filled with colours of seasonal flowers. If weather permits, unlike typical flower farms, you can pick some of the flowers here to bring back with you! Strawberry-picking is available in the farm here too. After lunch, you will head off to the Nagoya Castle. Constructed on the orders of Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1612, the remaining structures and artifacts have been handed down as Important Cultural Assets. Take in the grace of the symbol of Nagoya and spot the gold tiger-headed dolphins on its roof while enjoying the cherry blossoms in the castle grounds too.
Day 02
Nagoya – Takayama
(C: B/L/D) . (D: B/-/d)
Hotel: C: Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan (Hot Spring); D: Hidatei Hanaougi (Hot Spring) or similar
(Car pick up in Nagoya city)
Leaving Nagoya today, you will head northwards to the mountainous regions of Central Japan. Known for its clear spring waters, Gujo Hachiman* is a picturesque riverside town located in the Gifu prefecture. The waterways here function the same way as they did way back in the Edo Period.
Sampling local fare is a favourite pastime for visitors to Takayama. While there are plenty of opportunities to do this throughout Takayama's charming streets, stepping into one of the numerous sake breweries in the Takayama Old Town is going to be worthwhile even if only to breathe the heady aromas and wander among the sake vats. A visit to miso shops is also recommended, as you can see bubbling pots of fresh miso with small paper cups around and feel free to help yourself to a taste!
Day 03
Takayama – Okuhida
(C: B/L/D) . (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: Hodakaso Sangetsu (Hot Spring) or similar
One of the best ways you can start a morning is to visit a local morning market. Get right into the action over at the Takayama Morning Market! Filled with both character as well as local produce from the surrounding areas, this is the place where you can truly engage all your senses – sight, sound, and taste! Besides being known for its morning market and traditional townscape, Takayama is home of one of Japan’s most beautiful festivals. The intricate and magnificent festival floats are housed in the Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall. Four out of the eleven festive floats used in the Takayama Festival are on display here. Just by weaving through the elaborate exhibits, looking at the intricate handicraft and wood work on the massive floats, you can already get an idea of how grand the festival will be.
Day 04
Okuhida
(C: B/L/D) . (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: Hodakaso Sangetsu (Hot Spring) or similar
Up for today is the Shirakawa-Go*, nestled in the high mountains of the Japan Alps. Here in this UNESCO World Heritage Site are traditional houses with its unique gassho-zukuri farm houses built entirely without nails. They are designed to withstand the large amounts of heavy snow that falls in this region during winter and their large attic space were used for the cultivation of silk worms. If you have worked up an appetite walking around in the cool spring air, try one of the Hida Beef skewers here. Seeing the marbled meats sizzling on the charcoal grill and smelling the wonderful scent wafting from the beef, be forewarned: One skewer is never enough!
Day 05
Okuhida – Matsumoto
(C: B/L/D) . (D: B/-/-)
Hotel: C: Matsumoto Marunouchi Hotel; D: Hotel Buena Vista or similar
Soaring up 2,156 metres to two-third of Mt Hotaka (Japan’s third tallest mountain) is the Shin-Hodaka Ropeway that has garnered a prestigious 2-star award in the Michelin Guidebook. Be simply awestruck by the sheer scale of nature’s beauty as you step out onto the observatory and see the peaks of the Japan Alps stretching endlessly into the horizon. It is no small feat to be the largest wasabi farm in a country like Japan, which consumes more wasabi than any other country in the world. The pristine snow melt from the Northern Alps creates the perfect conditions for the growing of wasabi and a wide array of wasabi products can be found at the Daio Wasabi Farm. Wasabi juice and wasabi wine anyone?
Day 06
Matsumoto – Lake Kawaguchi
(C: B/L/D) . (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: La Vista Fuji Kawaguchiko (Hot Spring) or similar
Today, you will be visiting the Hakushu Distillery. Japanese whisky has been gaining popularity, and especially in recent years, bottles have been practically flying off the shelves. A visit here will allow you to feast your eyes on the spectacular nature settings of this ‘Forest Distillery’ while walking you through the history and processes behind one of Japan’s top brew. Never mind how many times it has appeared on postcards, paintings, or even the back of the 1,000yen note, Mt Fuji still stirs the spirits of those who visit it. It sweeps up majestically from the Pacific to form a nearly perfect symmetrical cone of 3,776m. Taking a drive up to Mt Fuji 5th Station will bring you to the highest point that cars can go up to. Depending on nature’s whim, the view here at times shrouded by fog or so clear until you can see the sprawling land below.
(Car return at Lake Kawaguchi)
Day 07
Lake Kawaguchi – Tokyo
(C: B/L/D) . (D: B/-/-)
Hotel: C: Imperial Hotel Tokyo; D: Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo or similar
Before heading into Tokyo, the Gotemba Premium Outlets will be a recommended place to stop over for some outlet shopping. The most popular outlet mall with over 200 stores along with restaurants, a food court and a 50 meter high Ferris wheel, Gotemba is very much considered a ‘shopper’s paradise”. The stores here are the outlets of internationally known brands of fashion, sports, food, household goods and electronics, and range from everyday items to luxury goods.
Day 08
Tokyo
(C: B/-/-) . (D: B/-/-)
