Day 01
Singapore – Nagoya – Takayama
(Coach: -/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hidatei Hanaougi (Hot Spring) or similar
Known for its clear spring waters, Gujo Hachiman is a picturesque riverside town located in the Gifu prefecture. The waterways here function the same way as they did way back in the Edo Period. Here you can take in the tranquil atmosphere of this traditional town and also partake in the interesting wax food sample making.
Day 02
Takayama
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hidatei Hanaougi (Hot Spring) or similar
First up this morning is a visit to the Takayama Morning Market. Filled with both interesting local characters and local produce, this is the place to truly engage all your senses, especially your sight, sound and definitely taste. Sampling local fare is a favourite pastime for visitors to Takayama. While there are plenty of opportunities to do this throughout Takayama's charming streets, stepping into one of the numerous sake breweries in the Takayama Old Town is going to be worthwhile even if only to breathe the heady aromas and wander among the sake vats. A visit to miso shops is also recommended, as you can see bubbling pots of fresh miso with small paper cups around and feel free to help yourself to a taste! Next up is the Shirakawa-Go*, nestled in the high mountains of the Japan Alps. Here in this UNESCO World Heritage Site are traditional houses with its unique gassho-zukuri farm houses built entirely without nails. They are designed to withstand the large amounts of heavy snow that falls in this region during winter and their large attic space were used for the cultivation of silk worms.
Day 03
Takayama – Matsumoto
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: KAI Matsumoto (Hot Spring) or similar
Soaring up 2,156metres to two-third of Mt Hotaka (Japan’s third tallest mountain) is the Shin-Hodaka Ropeway that has garnered a prestigious 2-star award in the Michelin Guidebook. Be simply awestruck by the sheer scale of nature’s beauty as you step out onto the observatory and see the peaks of the Japan Alps stretching endlessly into the horizon. Take a step away from the spectacular nature scenery of Central Japan and head to the Matsumoto City Museum of Art in the afternoon. The dynamic outdoor installation “Magical Flower” by Yayoi Kusama – native of Matsumoto – and her distinctive polka dots sets the tone of the museum. Dedicated to local artists, the art installations revolve around the museum’s four fundamental themes of Appreciation, Representation, Learning and Communication.
Day 04
Matsumoto
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: KAI Matsumoto (Hot Spring) or similar
Beyond Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka, there are many other cities that have a long history, and these cities usually originate from castle towns. Matsumoto is one such example. The Matsumoto Castle is a National Treasure of Japan and it lays claim to the oldest five-tiered keep in Japan. Creating an almost poetic symmetry with the grand castle is the majestic Japan Alps stretching seemingly endlessly in the background. In the afternoon, you will try your hand at miso making! Miso has to be a staple in all Japanese’ diet and today you can learn what goes on behind the making this protein-packed paste.
Day 05
Matsumoto – Lake Kawaguchi
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: La Vista Fuji-Kawaguchiko (Hot Spring) or similar
In the morning, you can visit the lovely Kawaguchiko Music Forest, a small theme park and museum devoted to mechanical musical instruments including antique music boxes, mechanical organs and other automatic instruments. The enclosed European-style garden with its delicate lawns and winding canals connects the museum's restaurant, shops, chapel and rose garden to one another. Discovering something new, this pleasant museum will surely satisfy you. Continue on to the traditional thatched roof village of Iyashi no Sato. It stands on the site of a former farming village on the western shores of Lake Saiko that was destroyed by a landslide during a typhoon in 1966. Forty years later, the village's traditional thatched roofed houses have been reconstructed and reopened as an open air museum and traditional craft village where people can learn about the Japanese culture and traditional products.
Day 06
Lake Kawaguchi – Tokyo
(Coach: Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel or similar
Before heading into Tokyo, the Gotemba Premium Outlets will be a recommended place to stop over for some outlet shopping. The most popular outlet mall with over 200 stores along with restaurants, a food court and a 50 meter high Ferris wheel, Gotemba is very much considered a ‘shopper’s paradise”. The stores here are the outlets of internationally known brands of fashion, sports, food, household goods and electronics, and range from everyday items to luxury goods.
