The first stop of the tour will be at one of Fukuoka’s must-visit sites, Daizaifu Shrine. One of the most important Tenmangu shrines, it is dedicated to scholar Sugaware Michizane, associated with the Shinto deity of education, making it particularly popular among students praying for academic success. Regular visitors can also enjoy the beautiful shrine grounds and shopping street leading up to it.
 
Stopping over at Amagi Park, you can see the blooming of around 4,000 cherry blossoms trees if the timing is right! Spread around a central pond and across this 31.7 hectare park, the cherry trees here have made the park a popular flower viewing spot in spring.
 
Head over to the Sakura Falls later to see one of Oita’s beautiful natural sights! So called due to the resemblance of the waterfall’s spray to the fluttering petals of cherry blossoms, the 25m tall cascade nestled in the forest is a great place to refresh your senses!

Day 02 (Thu, 26 Mar’20)

Spend the day strolling about the picturesque streets of Yufuin. With many intimate cafes, boutiques and small museums, the quaint town is the perfect place to spend a day of exploration. At the end of the street, stop by at the peaceful Lake Kirinko, which both hot and cold springs feed into, and admire the view of the twin peaked Mt Yufu that overlooks the town. Take the roads less travelled here with us as your exploration leads down lesser-known paths to a view of the countryside only known to locals.

Day 03 (Fri, 27 Mar’20)
Yufuin – Aso

Not for the faint-hearted, walk out onto Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge this morning, one of the longest and tallest pedestrian suspension bridges in Japan. Spanning 390m across a mountain valley and towering at 777m in height, fantastic views of beautiful waterfalls, great forests, mountain ranges and a deep valley can be had from here.
 
Go for a short walk to Oike Pond and Meisui Falls and immerse yourself in nature! Trekking through a nature trail (around 1.4km), taste the fresh spring waters of Oike Pond where 20,000 tons of cool water bubble up daily. Travelling down the sloping path, past ancient trees and lush forests, you will end up at Meisui Falls where the refreshing spray of the waterfall can be felt.
 
Drive up to Mt Nakadake next, one of the most active volcanoes in Japan. Located on Mt Aso, the steaming emerald crater lake and smell of sulphur in the air is sure to leave an impression of the volcano on your senses!

One of Miyazaki prefecture’s most famous sights, Takachiho Gorge is a V-shaped gorge created by the Gokase River eroding through volcanic rock. The 17m high Minainotaki waterfall cascading into the river midway through the gorge paints a particularly impressive picture as the clear water cascades down against a background of grey cliffs and fresh green foliage.
 
Steeped in mythology, the nearby Amano Iwato Shrine is built near a cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu was said to have hidden herself from her brother, depriving the world of light. Built at the edge of a river surrounded by tranquil forests, the shrine is shrouded in a mystical air befitting of the legend behind it.

Day 05 (Sun, 29 Mar’20)

An old castle town often referred to as the “City of Water”, Yanagawa is crossed by numerous waterways, constructed to add defence to the castle in ancient times. Now, these waterways serve as pleasant routes for visitors to take as boats called “donko” ply the canals, steered by boatmen using a single long pole. Take a leisurely cruise down Yanagawa’s waterways and see the historical town in a different light.
 
In operation since 1711, the Shoubunsu Vinegar Brewery prides itself in using traditional methods handed down within the family for generations. Made using organic local ingredients, the quality of the ingredients can be tasted in the resulting brown rice vinegar.
 
Do some strawberry picking today and get your fill of the sweet and tart fruit! Head into a strawberry farm where you can pick and eat all the fresh strawberries you want!
