Day 00

Make your way to Fukuoka on a direct flight from Singapore, or travel over by domestic flight or shinkansen from elsewhere in Japan.

Day 01

Fukuoka – Kitakyushu

Picking up your car this morning, start off with some fun at Umi no Nakamichi Seaside Park, a huge leisure park which includes a zoo, aquarium, water park, and sprawling gardens of seasonal flowers. Catch gorgeous scenery of blooming cherry blossoms, tulips, nemophila, hydrangea, cosmos, autumn colours and more here at different times of the year! Travel a bit further to the historical island of Shikanoshima to soak in the coastal views and hit the beach to enjoy marine sports in summer. Don’t forget to drop by the TOTO Museum afterwards to learn about the evolution of Japan’s impressive multifaceted toilets which have revolutionised the sanitation industry.

Day 02

Kitakyushu – Beppu

Hotel: Onyado Nono Beppu (Hot Spring) or similar

Pay a visit to the ‘Kitchen of Kitakyushu’, Tanga Market, and try some of the freshest seafood and produce sold at the roughly 120 stalls at this Showa-retro market street. Then travel over to the scenic town of Yufuin where you can spend hours strolling around its many quaint shops, cafes, art galleries, and picturesque lanes. Be sure to stop by the iconic Lake Kinrinko at the base of the twin-peaked Mt Yufu where both hot and cold spring waters bubble up. Then ride up the Beppu Ropeway, flanked by cherry blossoms in spring and fiery foliage in autumn, for a panoramic view of the town with its famous rising pillars of hot steam before enjoying a soak in the healing waters at your accommodation tonight.

Day 03

Beppu – Aso

Take a thrilling walk across the 777m-high Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge for some fantastic views of the surrounding valley from one of Japan’s longest and tallest pedestrian suspension bridges before heading to one of Japan’s most beautiful hot spring towns, Kurokawa Onsen. Soak in the traditional atmosphere of the well-preserved naturalistic townscape and drop in at the many small shops and cafes here.

Frolic on the grassy plains of Kusasenri, a grassland plateau home to grazing horses and a fantastic view of the peaks of Mt Aso. If deemed safe to do so, you can even drive up to the smoking emerald crater of Nakadake, the most active volcano on Mt Aso.

Day 04

Aso – Miyazaki

Marvel at the ethereal sight of Takachiho Gorge, a stunning gorge of towering volcanic rock flanking both sides of the clear Gokase River. Accentuated by a 17m high waterfall along its cliff face, a stroll along the gorge brings wonderful views, especially when it’s decorated with autumn colours. Head up to the Kunimigaoka Observatory next for sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, including the five peaks of Aso, in a panorama which has even been awarded one star in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. While in Miyazaki, make sure to also try some Miyazaki wagyu beef, considered one of the best wagyu in the country!

Day 05

Miyazaki – Kagoshima

Give your health a boost with some high quality black vinegar from Kakuida Black Vinegar Factory, producers of tasty and healthy black vinegar, before travelling to Kagoshima’s iconic Sakurajima, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. Stop at its many observatories to admire the views of the volcano’s craters, lava fields, Kagoshima City, and its surrounding bay, before taking a car ferry over to the city.

Day 06

Kagoshima – Kumamoto

Immerse in art and nature at the same time at the ‘art forest’, Kirishima Open-Air Museum, where fantastical artworks are seamlessly melded into the nature which surrounds it. Then travel onwards to another natural wonder, Sogi waterfall, a 210m-wide cascade nicknamed the ‘Niagara of the East’, for more gorgeous natural scenery amidst its invigorating spray.

Day 07

Kumamoto – Fukuoka

A visit to the impressive Kumamoto Castle is a must while in the city, and especially so in spring and autumn when its grounds are covered in pink cherry blossoms or autumn foliage. Not far away is Suizenji Jojuen Garden, a beautiful Japanese landscape garden and miniature recreation of the Tokaido route between Edo and Kyoto.

Heading northwards, make a stop at the ‘City of Water’, Yanagawa, where you can take a leisurely ‘donko’ boat ride down the scenic waterways of this historic town. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is also worth a stop at on your way into Fukuoka. Dedicated to the deity of education, the beautiful vermillion shrine is particularly popular amongst those praying for academic success, while the busting shopping street along its approach provides plenty of snacks and souvenirs to peruse.

Day 08 and beyond

Fukuoka – Saga – Fukuoka

Take a day trip out to Nagasaki where you can take the Kujukushima Cruise out to admire the many offshore islands and scenic coastline, or spend the day at Huis Ten Bosch, a Dutch-themed park with games, attractions and a unique European atmosphere.

While in Nagasaki, try a tasty Sasebo Burger, a local, homemade rendition of the traditional American hamburger, before rounding off your trip with an outlet shopping spree at Tosu Premium Outlets.

Alternatively, spend some time exploring the picturesque Mifuneyama Rakuen, a beautifully landscaped garden accentuated by seasonal colours, and visit the ‘Village of Secret Kilns’, Okawachiyama, where Japanese porcelain originated and still thrives till this day.

Returning your car in Fukuoka this evening, enjoy a last night in the city before taking a flight home tomorrow morning, or extend your stay in Kyushu or elsewhere in Japan!
