Kyushu has a beautiful mix of history, folklore, natural sights and wonderful cuisine. Begin your trip with a short trip to Fukuoka’s most famous shrine – Dazaifu Shrine, built in the memory of a 9th centrury official named Sugawara Michizane who was deified as a god of scholarship on the merit of his great learning. This explains the hordes of students visiting the shrine to pray for divine help during the university entrance examination season. Look for the bridge symbolizing past, present and future along with Tobiume or flying plum tree among the thousands of plum trees on the grounds.

The city of Nagasaki has a history of exposure to foreign cultures due to its proximity to the Asian mainland and also as one of the few ports open to foreign trade during Japan’s period of isolation. With only five villas and an area of 60 hectares, Tenku no Mori is a highly exclusive resort, touted as a place to rediscover yourself. Take a lovely walk here and the significance of the meaning of its name "forest in the sky" will dawn on you swiftly enough. This Japanese Eden is the fruit of more than 10 years of landscaping labour by the site's owner, Tajima san. With a view of the Kirishima mountain range, relish in a lunch of original cuisine made with homegrown ingredients.
In the afternoon, head out to either Sengan-en Garden or Chin Jukan Kiln. This traditional garden is known for "borrowed scenery" from Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima, an active volcano. Cat lovers should head to Nekogami Jinja, a shrine dedicated to cats! As a testament to its historical significance, the garden was used extensively in the filming of NHK's 2008 Taiga drama Atsuhime
