Day 01 (Mon, 19 Dec'22)
Singapore – Haneda – Kagoshima – Kirishima
(-/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hoshino Resorts KAI Kirishima (Hot Spring) or similar
Arriving in Kagoshima this morning, start your trip at Senganen Garden, a traditional Japanese garden that is beautiful in all seasons. A UNESCO World Heritage Site that is over 350 years old, the garden consists of a preserved residence that was the home of the former ruling Shimazu clan, ponds, streams and shrines, including a cat shine for cat-lovers! The attractive garden is accentuated by the “borrowed scenery” of Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima in the background, creating picture perfect settings.
Move on to the symbol of Kagoshima, Sakurajima, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. Located in the middle of Kagoshima Bay, it stands at 1,117m and has a circumference of about 50km. From its observatories, you can get a view of the mountain peak, port, Kagoshima City and mountains of Kyushu.
Day 02 (Tue, 20 Dec'22)
Kirishima – Nichinan – Kirishima
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hoshino Resorts KAI Kirishima (Hot Spring) or similar
Take a step back in time at Obi Castle Town this morning, where well-preserved samurai houses and streets transport you to a bygone era. Known as the “little Kyoto of Kyushu”, the town’s long history can be seen and felt though visits to the Obi Castle ruins, samurai residences, merchant houses, and other sites.
Head over to Udo Shrine next for some stunning views at this unique shrine along the Nichinan Coast. Set in a cave by the seaside, the vermillion shrine contrasts against the deep blue sea and rocky coast to create a picturesque scene. The shrine is also known for fertility and is popular amongst couples.
Set your eyes on an unusual sight next at Sun Messe Nichinan where 7 Moai statues stand against the beautiful backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. Replicated with special permission from Easter Island, the statues are of the same shape and size as the originals and face inland towards their counterparts located 15,000km away.
Day 03 (Wed, 21 Dec'22)
Kirishima
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hoshino Resorts KAI Kirishima (Hot Spring) or similar
The Kirishima Open-Air Museum is a modern art museum set in tranquil natural surroundings. Known as an 'art forest', about 22 art pieces dot the open space of the museum, melding seamlessly with the beautiful Kirishima forest. The works of art here are in fact created with their surroundings in mind and are all original pieces crafted by local and international artists who have visited the museum. Enjoy art with all your senses as you interact with the art works here.
Make a stop at Ebino Highland in the mountains of Kirishima to take in some of its panoramic landscapes. Popular as a hiking spot during the green season, you can enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains from here and perhaps encounter some active wild deer!
Kirishima Shrine is considered the “Nikko of the West” due to its beautiful design being similar to the extravagant Nikko Shrine. The shrine has strong connections to Japanese mythology and is dedicated to Ninigi no Mikoto, descendent of sun goddess Amaterasu, who became human to rule the area. An 800-year-old sacred cedar tree said to answer prayers can also be found on its grounds.
Day 04 (Thu, 22 Dec'22)
Kirishima – Takachiho – Aso
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hoshino Resorts KAI Aso (Hot Spring) or similar
One of Miyazaki prefecture’s most famous sights, Takachiho Gorge is a V-shaped gorge created by the Gokase River eroding through volcanic rock. The 17m high Minainotaki waterfall cascading into the river midway through the gorge paints a particularly impressive picture as the clear water cascades down against a background of grey cliffs. Take a boat ride through the gorge and fully immerse yourself in its impressive features.
This afternoon, go for a ride on the Amaterasu Railway to admire the gorgeous natural landscapes around Takachiho. Repurposing the tracks of the old Takachiho Railway, this unique open-air cart brings visitors on a leisurely ride across beautiful sceneries, illuminated tunnels, and the highlight of the journey, the Takachiho Iron Bridge, formerly the highest railway bridge in Japan at 105m.
Day 05 (Fri, 23 Dec'22)
Aso – Yufuin
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hoshino Resorts KAI Yufuin (Hot Spring) or similar
Have some fun in the snow today at Kuju Forest Park Skiing Ground. One of the few places in Kyushu to enjoy snow activities, have a go at sledding and play to your heart’s content in the snow here!
Later, spend some time strolling about the picturesque streets of Yufuin. With many intimate cafes, boutiques and small museums, the quaint town is the perfect place to spend a day of exploration. At the end of the street, stop by at the peaceful Lake Kirinko, which both hot and cold springs feed into, and admire the view of the twin peaked Mt Yufu that overlooks the town.
Day 06 (Sat, 24 Dec'22)
Yufuin – Beppu – Yufuin
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hoshino Resorts KAI Yufuin (Hot Spring) or similar
Japan’s hot springs are well known for soaking in, but the Hells of Beppu are more of a visual treat rather than a physical one. Each of the different hells contains a different kind of hot spring, and you will see a couple of them today. While you cannot bathe at these ‘hells’, they certainly make interesting sights!
A designated Japanese Traditional Craft, Beppu bamboo craftsmanship is known for its high quality and long history dating back to the Muromachi period. Made using various high quality Japanese bamboo and skilful weaving techniques, the bamboo crafts range from household items to decorative pieces. Try your hand at making your own bamboo craft in a bamboo weaving experience today and bring home a souvenir of this tradition!
Day 07 (Sun, 25 Dec'22)
Yufuin – Hita – Fukuoka
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hotel Nikko Fukuoka or similar
Visit Hita Mameda Town this morning, a well-preserved district of historic buildings. While many of the traditional Japanese houses have been converted into cafes, museums and shops, the street itself retains the flavour of the Edo period. Gas lamps still line the streets and electric cables are purposely hidden underground to preserve the traditional feel of the town.
Indulge in some sake tasting later as you sample a variety of locally produced sakes. Pick out the ones you like and perhaps bring some home with you!
Afterwards, head to one of Fukuoka’s must-visit sites, Dazaifu Shrine. One of the most important Tenmangu shrines, it is dedicated to scholar Sugaware Michizane, associated with the Shinto deity of education, making it particularly popular among students praying for academic success. Regular visitors can also enjoy the beautiful shrine grounds and shopping street leading up to it.
Day 08 (Mon, 26 Dec'22)
Fukuoka
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hotel Nikko Fukuoka or similar
Spend the day exploring the sights of Fukuoka City! First, get up close to about 20,000 marine creatures at Marine World. Learn all about the marine life surrounding Kyushu and catch some of the many shows and experiences, such as the dolphin and sea lion show held against the backdrop of the Hakata Bay. Next, take a ride up Fukuoka Tower, the tallest seaside tower in Japan at 234m high. Get a 360-degree panoramic view of Fukuoka City and Hakata Bay from the observatory here. Then round off your trip with a shopping spree at Canal City Hakata, a shopping and entertainment ‘city within a city’. So named for the canal running through this mega entertainment complex, you can find a wide range of local and international brands here to satisfy your shopping needs.
