On the day of arrival, pick-up car and have a short driving journey around the area. Nearby is a popular, Loghouse Restaurant Bibi serving irresistible barbecue wagyu beef which you may want to stop by for lunch before check-in to hotel.
Day 02 (Fri, 05 Jul’19)
Chitose – Tokachigawa

Start off with a drive to the dramatic Cape Erimo, where the Hidaka Mountain Range ends and the sea begins. The windy cape is where you can look out onto the Pacific Ocean from rocky cliffs up to 70m high and enjoy panoramic views along with sightings of the harbour seals that live here!
Drive along the scenic, coastal Golden Road as you head up to the Tokachi Millennium Forest. A huge area designed for environmental conservation, immerse yourself in nature at the sprawling gardens, a couple of which have won awards for their beautiful garden designs.
When in Tokachi, be sure to try the local speciality, butadon! Slices of quality grilled pork coated in a special sauce and placed on a bowl of fluffy rice, this simple dish expertly done is a mouth-watering delight!
Day 03 (Sat, 06 Jul’19)
Tokachigawa – Kushiro

Once thought to be extinct, the Japanese red crowned cranes were first successfully bred at the Kushiro Japanese Crane Reserve. Here, around 10 cranes, which are designated as a special natural monument of Japan, are raised in an environment that resembles their natural habitat and can be seen all year round.
Over at the Ayamegahara Wild Iris Garden, up to 300,000 irises can be seen blooming in a 100ha field on the coast. Blue and purple irises decorate the cliff in this season and an Iris Festival is held in conjunction with the blooming of the flowers. Catch the Iris Festival in addition to about 100 varieties of alpine plants that can be found here!
Special Highlights:
Akkeshi, neighboring Kushiro to the east, is famous for their oysters. Akkeshi oysters are slowly raised over a period of 3 years so although small-shelled, they are plump and juicy. To get the best out of your Akkeshi oyster experience, get to Akkeshi Flavor Terminal Conchiglie. Here you can enjoy oysters prepared in a dazzling array of methods – fried, raw, roasted, curry, the list goes on.
Day 04 (Sun, 07 Jul’19)
Kushiro – Nemuro – Kushiro

Immerse yourself in nature at Shunkunitai, a sandbank between Lake Furen and the Sea of Okhotsk. Consisting of marshes, grasslands, mudflats and forests, the small island plays host to a variety of wildlife and is a sanctuary for wild birds. Take a stroll on the boardwalk through the raw landscape and do some birdwatching!
As its name suggests, the Northern Natural Flower Garden is a large field of alpine flowers and plants facing the Sea of Okhotsk. The garden is home to around 100 varieties of wild flowers including irises, skunk cabbage, daylilies, dandelions and more.
The easternmost tip of Japan, Cape Nosappu is where the waters of the Okhotsk Sea and Pacific Ocean meet. Take in the sights of the stunning coast, the oldest lighthouse in Hokkaido, and fields of grazing cows and horses at this windy cape.
Day 05 (Mon, 08 Jul’19)
Kushiro – Shiretoko

The Notsuke Peninsula stretching out into the Sea of Okhotsk is said to be shaped like a whale’s lower jaw. The largest sandbar in Japan, it is also known as “the end of the world” thanks to the desolate scenery of withered trees in some parts of this unique ecosystem.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Shiretoko Five Lakes look whimsically like a god’s handprint and can be visited via an elevated boardwalk to protect the fragile ecosystems. From here, you can enjoy views of the lake, Sea of Okhotsk and surrounding mountains.
Day 06 (Tue, 09 Jul’19)
Shiretoko – Monbetsu

Drive along the stunning coastline up to Cape Notoro today. The cape juts defiantly out into the Sea of Okhotsk and boasts an endless view of the sea accented by its black and white lighthouse.
Passing by Saroma, do not forget to try some of their scallops. Cultivated in plankton-rich waters of the sheltered Lake Saroma, the scallops produced here are extra plump and sweet!
Day 07 (Wed, 10 Jul’19)
Monbetsu – Wakkanai

Today, visit the northernmost tip of Japan, Cape Soya! Marked by the Monument of Japan’s Northern Most Point, you can look across the sea to Russia on a clear day. Behind the cape, the rolling Soya Hills beckon with 57 windmills, gentle hills that showcase periglacial landforms and grazing Soya Black Cattle.
Day 08 (Thu, 11 Jul’19)
Wakkanai – Rishiri

Take a car ferry to Rishiri Island off the coast of Hokkaido and go for an island drive! Visit Himenuma Pond at the base of Mt Rishiri where both the reflection of Mt Rishiri in the pond and the actual mountain can be seen at the same time. Heading to Otatomari Pond in the Numaura Wetland, you will be able to see beautiful scenes of the island’s largest pond with Mt Rishiri in the background.
Day 09 (Fri, 12 Jul’19)
Rishiri – Rebun – Wakkanai

Taking a car ferry to neighbouring Rebun Island, drive round to Cape Sukoton at the northernmost tip of Rebun from which you can see the open sea and nearby rocky islands. Due to the location of the island and ocean currents, the sea urchin here are known to be of especially high quality. Pay a visit to the Unimuki Experience Center where you can experience peeling the fresh sea urchin for yourself, and taste how delicious it is!
After a day of island exploration, take a car ferry back to Wakkanai for the night.
Day 10 (Sat, 13 Jul’19)
Wakkanai – Asahikawa

Picking up your car, head south to the Sarobetsu Primeval Flower Garden and witness wide open fields decorated with alpine wetland plants such as daylilies, lingonberry and sundew as you stroll along the boardwalk through the garden.
Driving along the coast in Rumoi, visit Cape Ogon, so named for the plentiful herrings that were lit up by the setting sun like gold in the past. Although the herring industry has since declined, the cape has retained its name and fame as one of the best places in Japan to see the setting sun.

Head to the rolling flower fields of Farm Tomita today! Famous for their lavender, the farm is home to vast expanses of flower fields that reach out into the distance. Bask in the sight, and smell, of calming lavender, and frolic amid a rainbow carpet of colourful flowers!
Summer is the season for melons in Hokkaido where some of the sweetest and juiciest melons are produced! Be sure to try some delicious melon for yourself!
