Toya – Hakodate
(C: B/L/D) • (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: C: Chikuba Shinyotei (Hot Spring); D: Banso Hotel (Hot Spring) or similar
Whenever in Hakodate, a stopover at the Hakodate Bay is a must. A picturesque series of red brick buildings lining the waterfront were once used as warehouses back in 1909. Now, it is home to over 40 crafts and even designer honey. Soft, bite-sized cheesecakes literally take the cake as Hakodate’s most popular dessert. Made from fresh Hokkaido milk and eggs, these heavenly-sinful goodies can be sampled here too! As the sun sets, a visit to the Mt Hakodate Ropeway is in store. Awarded the three-star rating in the “Michelin Green Guide Japon”, the ropeway brings you up to 334 metres above sea level to one of the world’s most magnificent night views. The city lights sparkle as if the galaxy has fallen on the sea to make an unforgettable impression.
Day 04
Hakodate
(C: B/L/D) • (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: C: Chikuba Shinyotei (Hot Spring); D: Banso Hotel (Hot Spring) or similar
Spring is the time where Hokkaido awakens from the slumber of winter and colour returns to the land. Start your day over at Matsumae Castle - Japan’s northernmost castle and the only one in Hokkaido. Designated in 1941 as a National Treasure, the castle ground boasts over 10,000 cherry trees of over 250 different varieties. Food and game stalls are put up during the Sakura Festival here. In the afternoon, take a ride up to the top of the Goryokaku Tower to get a bird’s eye view of Japan’s first western-style fort as well as the 1,600 cherry trees that line the moat surrounding the tower. It was the site where the last stage of the Boshin War was fought in the “Battle of Hakodate” (1868 – 1869) between the emerging Meiji Government and the Tokugawa Government.
Day 05
Hakodate – Rusutsu / Niseko
(C: B/L/D) • (D: B/-/D)
Hotel: C: One Niseko (Hot Spring); D: Rusutsu Resort (Hot Spring) or similar
Surrounded by the ocean on three sides, the seafood in Hakodate has to be some of the freshest you will encounter on this trip. Over at the Hakodate Morning Market, more than 300 shops and restaurants create a lively atmosphere as you go from shop to shop, sampling and buying as you go along. Heading back north in the afternoon, you will visit the Onuma Quasi-national Park. Located at the foot of Mt Komagatake, an active volcano, this is a good place for a stop to stretch your legs and to take in the beauty of Hokkaido’s natural scenery. The view of Mt Komagatake reflected on the waters of the island-studded lakes has garnered Onuma the honour as one of Japan’s New Three Famous Views.
Day 06
Rusutsu / Niseko – Sapporo
(C: B/L/D) • (D: B/-/-)
Hotel: JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo or similar
Mt Yotei is fondly referred to as Hokkaido’s very own Mt Fuji and nestled at its foot is the Fukidashi Park. The park sprouts over 80,000 tons of water per day. Do as the locals do here over at one of Japan’s top hundred best springs; bring an empty bottle with you to collect the spring water! Clear water, cool air and rich peat give rise to the perfect conditions for whisky production here in Yoichi. This is why Nikka Whisky, one of Japan’s top whisky makers, has its main distillery here. Started in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, father of Japanese whisky, Nikka Whisky is home to numerous award-winning whiskies and its most renowned has to be its Taketsuru Pure Malt. A tour around the distillery will culminate in a sampling room where you can try this liquid gold for yourself. Enroute to Sapporo today, you will spend some time in Otaru. With a rich history that dates back to its early days as a major herring centre and the terminal station for Hokkaido’s first railroad, Otaru’s charming buildings now house whimsical music box museums, patisseries with absolutely tempting cream puffs and also those selling intricate glassware ornaments.
Day 07
