Day 02
Awara Onsen
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Awara Onsen Mimatsu Bettei Biyu (Private hotspring room) or similar
Jagged basalt cliffs bordering the sea, carved over time by wind and waves, are the hallmark of Tojinbo. These unique rock formations can only be seen in three places in the world and paint a breath-taking picture when juxtaposed against the choppy sea. Take one of the trails to explore the cliffs and the different views it offers. After lunch, pay a visit to the Sabae Megane Museum and learn the history and process required to manufacture a pair of glasses. Located in Sabae, where titanium spectacle frames originated and Google glass frames are produced, the museum showcases why the area is one of the leading spectacle producers in the world. Bespectacled visitors can take the chance to purchase a pair of quality frames too. Switching gears, a visit to the Fukui Dinosaur Museum, one of the best in the world, is next. With life sized dinosaur replicas, hands on exhibits where you can touch real fossils, and opportunities to watch technicians at work, your visit promises to be both educational and entertaining. Be sure to check out the life-like animatronic tyrannosaurus rex while there.
Day 03
Awara Onsen – Kanazawa
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hotel Nikko Kanazawa or similar
Winter is sake brewing season in Japan. Naturally, a trip to Kano Sake Brewery to learn about the process is in order. Using rice that they grow themselves, the purest water, and meticulous fermentation processes, the sake from this brewery is especially sweet and flavourful. You can sample the sake for yourself here, and buy some to bring home with you too. In the afternoon, visit the icon of Kanazawa, Kenrokuen, one of Japan’s three most beautiful gardens. Gorgeous in every season, the garden is especially picturesque in winter when blanketed in a layer of pristine, white snow. Pine trees held up by yukitsuri, a Japanese technique used to protect branches from heavy snow, are a signature of the garden in winter and create a stunning image when reflected on the calm surface of the Kasumigaike pond. From there, head over to the Higashi Chaya District. Chaya, or teahouses, are where geisha have been entertaining guests with music and dancing since the Edo period. Many of these immaculately preserved traditional wooden houses have been converted into cafes and shops selling local specialities such as tea, gold leaf products and Japanese sweets, but a few remain as geisha houses, providing a brief glimpse into their lives.
Day 04
Kanazawa
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hotel Nikko Kanazawa or similar
Journey out of the city to Shirakawa- Go, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are hundreds of years old. The thatched gassho-style roofs, designed to withstand heavy snowfall, are constructed entirely without the use of nails. In addition, the use of attic space in the roofs for cultivating silkworms is unique to Shirakawa-Go. Spend the day wandering through the tranquil village of traditional houses and rice fields and take the chance to examine these architectural wonders up close. Next up is our specially-organised Nanto Activity. Nestled deep in the mountains of the Japan Alps, you will gain a deeper appreciation of the grand surroundings and a better understanding of the locals here after our unique activities
Day 05
Kanazawa – Wakura Onsen
(Coach: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Matsu no Midori (Hot Spring) or similar
Start the day with a guided tour of Myoryoji temple, more commonly known as Ninjadera, or ninja temple. Its seemingly normal façade bellies a labyrinth of secret rooms and traps used to defend against enemies during the reign of the Maeda family in the Edo period. Marvel at the ingenuity of the design of the temple as tricks and secrets are revealed to you one by one. As you head up to the Noto peninsular, take in the sights of the Chirihama beach driveway, the only beach in Japan which you can drive on. Cruise along the sandy beach as you watch the waves lapping the shoreline right next to you. Lunch for today will be Noto beef. Required to meet stringent quality standards, Noto beef is known for being tender and having excellent fat marbling. Indulge in a spot of afternoon tea next at Le Musee De H, a café by famous patisserie Tsujiguchi Hironobu. Savour his decadent creations as you take in the view of Nanao bay, and admire some of his creative sugar art pieces at a small museum in the building. Adjourn over to Matsu no Midori, your accommodation for the night, and experience a Japanese tea ceremony before a sumptuous kaiseki dinner of the finest seasonal delicacies that the Noto has to offer.
