First up for today is a visit to the Fushimi Inari Taisha. Its seemingly endless path of over 5,000 vibrant vermillion torii gates winding through the green hills is an instantly recognizable sight of Kyoto. After working up your appetite with the stroll in the morning, you will drop by the Nishiki Market, which is known fondly and aptly as the ‘Kitchen of Kyoto’. Started as a fish market in 1615, most of the over 100 shops here specialize in a particular type of food and have been run by the same families for generations. Here you can enjoy the warmth of the locals and take in the seasonal food offerings of Kyoto. Wrap up your day with another of Kyoto’s key highlight – Gion. Kyoto’s history is almost palpable as you stroll along the picturesque streets lined with low houses with their elegant and intricate wooden lattice windows.

A place that needs little introduction, you will begin today at Kinkakuji. With its top two floors completely covered in gold leaf, the Golden Pavilion bears testament to the extravagance of Kyoto’s wealthy aristocrats in the Edo period. Go even further back in time at Kiyomizu Temple. It was established in 778, even before Kyoto became the capital of Japan. One of the most famous representations of Kyoto is the sight of Kiyomizu Temple’s stage jutting defiantly out of the side of the Otawa mountain, supported by huge 13 meter Japanese Zelkova pillars and a feat of engineering as not a single nail was used in the construction of this stunning architecture. The crimson red autumn foliage of Kyoto has to be seen with your own eyes to be believed. Get your camera ready for the postcard-perfect moment as you walk through the temple grounds. As dusk falls, strolling the narrow lanes of Higashiyama invokes a feeling being in old Kyoto at its height as Japan’s capital. Extraordinary care has been taken to preserve the ancient buildings weathered through centuries of sun and snow.

Kyoto – Kameoka

When in Arashiyama in autumn, there are two things you must do – walk through the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and take the Hozu River Cruise. Walking into the grove is like entering a magical world where thick green bamboo stalks seem to continue endlessly. In the afternoon, you will make your way down the Hozu River using the traditional flat bottomed boats guided by boatmen with their oars and bamboo poles. The river was originally used to transport wooden logs used to build Kyoto’s and Osaka’s castles. Now, pleasure boats ferrying travellers ply the most scenic 16-kilometer stretch of the river, bringing them along the forested banks in all their autumn glory, unique rock formations and occasionally eliciting excited shouts as the boat passes through the small rapids.

Kameoka – Amanohashidate

In the morning, you will take the cable car to Kasamatsu Park where you will be treated to one of Japan’s top three most beautiful spots – Amanohashidate. Literally translating to the ‘Bridge to Heaven’, this 3.6 kilometer pine-crusted sand bar took over thousands of years to form. Pristine white sand beaches, azure blue waters and the deep green pine trees all combine into a stunning sight to behold. At the Amanohashidate View Land and in the crisp autumn mountain air, you will learn the special technique of ‘Matanozoki’ to catch a glimpse of this Stairway to Heaven. If the weather is good, you are recommended to come down using the chairlift!

Today, you will travel to the Ine Peninsular. The precious finger of land juts out into clear waters of the Ine Bay. This is where you will be visiting one of the highlights of your tour – Boat Houses of Ine. Just imagine the sounds of the waves lapping against the wooden beams of the traditional boathouses, occasional call of the passing sea gulls, the feeling of gentle sun on your face and the salty smell of the sea in the air. No noisy crowds and the unpleasant smell of car exhaust. This unique and rural sight can be appreciated when you board the Ine Bay Cruise and you can see the whole structure of these boathouses hugging the coastline. The ground floor opens to the water, and is used as a bay for the fishing boats and to house the boating equipment. Living quarters are on the floor above the water. If the opportunity arises, you can enter one of the boathouses to see how people here go about their daily life.

Amanohashidate – Osaka

As we move from Amanohashidate to Osaka today, we will stop by the hotspring town of Kinosaki enroute. Strolling the willow-lined river, you can experience a piece of Japan’s history and culture here at one of Japan’s favourite hotspring town before you head back to the excitement of the big city of Osaka. Do remember to give its numerous foot hotsprings a try as you walk through the history of Kinosaki!

After spending days immersed in the cultural, rural and historical depths of Kyoto, it is time for a free day in Osaka! For those who are in need of shopping therapy, you will find the widest variety over at the station areas and of course over at Dotonbori. No visit to Osaka will be complete without trying its famed takoyaki and okonomiyaki right from the food stands. Well, Osaka is well-deserving of its reputation as the “Kitchen of Japan” and you will definitely enjoy yourself!
