Arriving in Miyazaki today, pay a visit to Aoshima Shrine, an island shrine surrounded by lush subtropical vegetation. Known for bring luck for marriage, the picturesque island the shrine sits on is also known for its unusual wavelike rock formations, or ‘devil’s washboard’, which appears at low tide.

Nothing says spring in Japan like cherry blossoms and Mochio Park is the perfect place to bask in the pink glow of these flowers! With 2,600 cherry blossom trees of different varieties lining a path of 2km, it is no wonder that this is one of Japan’s top 100 cherry blossom spots.

Black vinegar is known to have a multitude of health benefits and Kakuida Black Vinegar Factory has been producing it for the last 200 years. Try some of their high-quality black vinegar, brewed for more than three years in earthenware pots, and rejuvenate your body from the inside.
Moving on to the symbol of Kagoshima, Sakurajima is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. Located in the middle of Kagoshima Bay, it stands at 1,117m and has a circumference of about 50km. Stop by at the Arimura Lava Observatory where you can peek into the volcano’s craters. Walk along the lava flow on the mountainside, distinguished according to eruption date by the state of the surrounding vegetation.
Kirishima Shrine is considered the “Nikko of the West” due to its beautiful design being similar to the extravagant Nikko Shrine. The shrine has strong connections to Japanese mythology and is dedicated to Ninigi no Mikoto, descendent of sun goddess Amaterasu, who became human to rule the area. An 800-year-old sacred cedar tree said to answer prayers can also be found on its grounds.

Go on a special visit to Horse Trust this morning, a ‘retirement home’ for racehorses, equestrian and riding club horses where they can live out their days freely as if in the wild. Set against the gorgeous backdrop of grasslands, forests, and the Kirishima mountain range, see and interact with the contented horses as you learn about the history, passion, and mission of this unique facility.
Move on to Sogi Falls later, a 12m high thundering waterfall which cascades down Senjoiwa Rock. Stretching across 210m, the scale and power of this waterfall has earned it the nickname of the ‘Niagara of the East’.
Relax at your accommodation at Ayu no Sato this evening where you can enjoy a soak in your private open-air hot spring bath with a view of the Kuma river and the Southern Kyushu Mountains. For dinner, dine on a meal curated from fresh seasonal local ingredients, showcasing the rich natural and agricultural produce of the area.

Experience life like a local in Hitoyoshi today as you travel around in small groups to lesser known spots, as if being introduced to local haunts by a friend! Start off with a tea tasting experience at Tateyama Shoten, proprietors of local Kuma tea for over a century. Taste some of the teas here and learn the method to brewing delicious green tea. Then, do some flower-viewing at the Hitoyoshi Castle Ruins, former home of the Sagara clan which ruled for 700 years, where some 230 cherry blossom trees are planted before having a delicious lunch of tofu made with some of the best water in the area. Finally, wrap up your day relaxing with some tea and snacks at Kuma Zen Style Café, a Zen themed café.
Day 06 (Tue, 26 Mar'24)
Hitoyoshi – Unzen

This morning, drop by Kumamoto Castle, regarded as one of Japan’s most impressive castles with many castle buildings and historical materials showcased here. The grounds of the castle are also home to around 800 cherry trees, making it a popular cherry blossom viewing spot when the flowers are in bloom.
After lunch, take a ferry over to Shimabara where you will head to Unzen Jigoku, sulphurous hot spring ‘hells’ scattered around the sides of Unzen Onsen that are marked by constant clouds of steam billowing above bubbling pools and vents. The hot spring hells were once used to execute Christian rebels after the Shimabara Rebellion, but are now a major attraction and the source of hot spring waters for the many resorts in the town.
Day 07 (Wed, 27 Mar'24)
Unzen – Nagasaki

The Oura Catholic Church, with its European style architecture and stained-glass windows, was built near the end of the Edo period by French missionaries and is considered the oldest church in Japan. Dedicated to the 26 Christian martyrs, it is also the first western-style building to be designated as a National Treasure.
Once the only point of contact to the Western world, Dejima was an artificial island built to host Portuguese, followed by Dutch, traders at a time when Japan was mostly isolated from the rest of the world. Today, it is a historic district showcasing preserved or reconstructed houses, warehouses and infrastructure with an European influence not commonly found during the Edo period.
At Glover Garden, former residences of Western merchants who settled in Nagasaki can be seen, including the Former Glover House, the oldest Western-style wooden building in Japan. The open-air museum is complemented by attractive gardens with cobblestone paths and wall fountains fitting for the houses they surround.

Sprawling out over 150,000 square metres at the base of Mt Mifune, Mifuneyama Rakuen is a picturesque garden sculpted over 3 years by former ruler of Takeo, Shigeyoshi Nabeshima. The mountain, trees, flowers, pond and tea houses all come together beautifully, like a scene from a Chinese painting.
