Arriving in Hokkaido, you are just in time to catch the Sapporo Snow Festival! Held across three different sites in Sapporo City, about 250 snow and ice sculptures are waiting for you. Over 100 of these can be seen at the main site at Odori Park just a short distance from your hotel, where the International Snow Sculpture contest, ski jump competitions, ice skating and lots of delicious street food can be enjoyed.

See the famous Shirogane Blue Pond for yourself today. The azure blue of the water is caused by its mineral composition and makes a fascinating sight juxtaposed against its sombre grey trees, dusted in a white coating of snow. Over at the source of the pond, Shirahige Falls, or ‘white beard falls’, is made up of many small streams of groundwater which cascade 30m down into a charming blue river.
Considered one of Japan’s best furniture towns, Asahikawa’s bountiful forests of oak trees created a thriving industry for furniture manufacturers producing high-quality furniture. To appreciate the varied designs and workmanship of the furniture produced here, you will visit the Asahikawa Design Center, a home for furniture and crafts. Showcasing furniture from over 30 makers, the centre is a mix between showroom and museum, where furniture can be both admired and purchased.

Today, visit the popular Asahiyama Zoo, where you will get to observe animals through unique display enclosures called ‘kodo-tenji’ that allow visitors to see the animals from different angles and up close. Watch seals swim vertically through a glass tunnel, see leopards walk above you, or pop into glass domes in the middle of the polar bear and wolf enclosures for a close encounter with wildlife!
This evening, join in the fun at the Sounkyo Ice Fall Festival. Featuring large sculptures and structures which you can enter, climb and slide on, explore buildings, caverns, domes, and even a bar made of snow and ice. Illuminated in bright colours at night, the ‘world of white’ takes on new life complementing the various activities and performances of the festival.

Lunch today will be at Fratello Di Mikuni, a one-star Michelin restaurant located in the lush forests of Kamikawa. Savour delectable Italian fare created using fresh, local seasonal produce as you gaze out onto a panoramic view of the Daisetsu Mountain range from your seat.
Continuing your journey on the Bihoro Pass, stop by at the viewing spot located on the western side of Lake Kussharo. From the 525m high observatory, you can take in impressive panoramic views of Lake Kussharo and its islands below.
Day 06 (Thu, 15 Feb'24)

Feast your eyes on a magnificent winter scene on an icebreaking cruise! Drift ice is an amazing phenomenon that only appears on the Sea of Okhotsk for a limited period each year and has become increasingly unpredictable as the climate changes. Take this opportunity to create an indelible memory on a cruise through the fantastic drift ice from the comfort of the 491 tonne ship, Aurora.
After lunch, visit the Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum. A museum dedicated to drift ice, experience the wintery Sea of Okhotsk through exhibits, 3D projections and actual drift ice kept in a -15 degree Celsius room. You will also get to see some of the sea creatures that inhabit drift ice filled waters, including the clione, the angel of the sea.

Day 07 (Fri, 16 Feb/24)
Abashiri – Shiretoko

To increase your chances of seeing drift ice, this morning will be reserved for another go on the icebreaking cruise should conditions prevent you from catching it earlier. If your drift ice expedition was a success, alternative activities will be arranged to see the wildlife of Shiretoko.
One of Japan’s 100 best waterfalls, Oshinkoshin Waterfall is a spectacular waterfall next to a coastal road. It is also known as “Twin Beauties Waterfall” as its stream splits into two partway down the approximately 80m drop. In winter, the frozen waterfall is a beautiful sight to see, as is the view of drift ice in the sea facing the falls.
Day 08 (Sat, 17 Feb'24)
Shiretoko – Akan

For the adventurous, you will have the option to go on a drift ice walk this morning. Don a dry suit and venture out onto the drift ice to feel what it is like to walk, and even lay on top of, the ice floes. You can even jump into the sea for an icy swim and experience floating alongside the ice.
Later, stop by at Sunayu, located on the shores of Lake Kussharo. This natural hot spring under the beach by the lakeside creates a natural border of warm water at the edge of the lake, the perfect bathing ground for whooper swans in winter! Soak your feet in a foot bath on the beach as you gaze out onto the beautiful sight of swans by the frozen lake with snow-covered mountains in the background.
After dinner, join in the festivities at the Lake Akan Ice Festival! Held on the frozen surface of the lake each winter, there are activities such as ice carving, games, performances showcasing the Ainu culture and more to entertain you. Each night also sees a spectacular display of fireworks decorating the clear winter sky, the perfect way to end the day.

This morning, admire the beauty and grace of the Tancho, Japanese red crowned crane, at one of the sanctuaries dedicated to the conservation of these precious birds. Once thought to be extinct, these cranes migrate to feeding sites in east Hokkaido every winter where they can be seen ‘dancing’ with graceful dips and jumps on the snowy fields.
Next, dig into some of Hokkaido’s bountiful seafood at Kushiro’s Washo Market. Try their famous “katte-don” a seafood rice bowl that you can customise. Browse the stalls and pick your favourite toppings from the selection of fresh seafood caught off the shores of Kushiro before tucking in!

Formed by ice floes from the Tokachi River breaking apart and polished by sand, these pieces of ice, clear and smooth like jewels, wash up on the shores of the beach. Shining with different hues depending on the sunlight, the gleaming Jewelry Ice is a magical sight.
