Arriving in Nagoya this morning, admire the autumn colours at Korankei Gorge, considered to be one of the best autumn-viewing spots in the Chubu region. Over 4,000 maple trees were planted here by monks in the 17th century, producing stunning scenery along the Tomoe River and its scenic bridges each autumn.
As the sky darkens, head to Nabana no Sato, a flower theme park where a spectacular illumination event is held each winter. The park comes alive with the glow of over eight million LED lights in one of Japan’s biggest illumination events and a highlight of winter in Mie. Walk through tunnels of lights and multicoloured fields with themed displays in a fantastic show of lights.
Day 02 (Sun, 26 Nov’23)

This morning, make a trip to Mikimoto Pearl Island, home of pearl cultivation in Japan. Here you can find Japan’s first pearl museum, see and buy pearls, and watch oyster harvesting demonstrations by Ama divers decked in traditional white outfits.
For lunch, you will visit an Ama hut where you can enjoy fresh seafood grilled for you by Ama divers, free divers who make a living harvesting seaweed and shellfish from the bottom of the bay. Spend some time with the Ama divers, hear their stories and learn about their unique lifestyles over a delicious meal featuring the local specialty, Ise Lobster.
Afterwards, stop by Ise Grand Shrine, the most important shrine in Japan. Consisting of an inner and outer shrine, the grand shrine is a popular attraction for both pilgrims and tourists. Along the approach to the inner shrine is Okage Yokocho, a charming street preserving the style and atmosphere of the Edo period, where shops selling local crafts and produce can be found.
Day 03 (Mon, 27 Nov’23)

Today, you will visit Matsusaka Castle, a National Historic site and one of the best 100 castles in Japan. Although the castle keep was destroyed many years ago, the remaining magnificent stone walls are a testament of its former glory. Now a peaceful park, the bright yellow of gingko leaves and other trees cover the park in autumn.
Matsusaka is known as the ‘town of wealthy merchants’ thanks to the many famous successful merchants it produced. See the extent of their prosperity through a visit to some of the well-preserved traditional Matsusaka merchant houses. Then, feast on a lunch of Matsusaka beef, considered to be one of the best beefs in Japan. Savour the rich marbling of this brand-name beef in a delicious meal.
Day 04 (Tue, 28 Nov’23)
Kyoto

Witness the autumn scenes of Kyoto at Eikando Temple with its beautiful pond garden, streams and connected complexes. It is also home to the Tahoto Pagoda, a two-storey pagoda on the hillside from which a wide view of the coloured trees in the temple grounds can be seen.
Following that, drop by Nishiki Market, the ‘Kitchen of Kyoto’. Started as a fish market in 1615, most of the 100 shops have been here for generations. Sample the seasonal food offerings of Kyoto and feel the warmth and liveliness of the locals.
In the afternoon, explore the old town of Arashiyama, a popular scenic district at the base of the Arashiyama mountains. Walk along the streets lined with shops selling all kinds of snacks and souvenirs, and stop by the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge. Not forgetting the famed bamboo groves, undoubtedly the highlight of Arashiyama, take a leisurely rickshaw ride through the bamboo forest for a unique experience only to be had here.
Day 05 (Wed, 29 Nov’23)
Kyoto – Okayama

Begin your journey on the luxury train Twilight Express Mizukaze today. Built on the concept of “superior quality with a touch of nostalgia”, the former sleeper train, Twilight Express, has been redesigned into a luxury train boasting sophisticated design, posh interiors, haute cuisine and the comfort of a hotel. Travelling round the Sanyo and Sanin coast, breath-taking views can be seen outside of your room window or from observation cars as you coast along the scenic route.
Not only will you marvel at the idyllic scenery from the train, planned stopovers allow you to enjoy the local sights and offerings at each area too. The first stop will be at Okayama, home to one of Japan’s three great gardens, Korakuen. The carefully curated garden combines aspects of nature into a picture-perfect scene, backed by the ‘borrowed scenery’ of Okayama Castle. The best view of the garden is designed to be had from Enyotei, a villa exclusively opened to the passengers of Mizukaze to enjoy the view.
Day 06 (Thu, 30 Nov’23)
Okayama – Unnan – Matsue

Wake up to the beautiful Sea of Japan as the train makes its way along the Orii Coast. Visiting the Unnan area today, you will take an excursion out to Sugaya Tatara Sannai where the ancient method of tatara ironmaking thrived and Japan’s only tatara ironmaking furnace still exists. Visit the residences and earthen storehouses of the wealthy Tanabe family, the most prominent ironmakers of their time. Later, you will be treated to a performance of Izumo Kagura, a traditional dance telling the stories of myths and historical events that is performed for the gods of the shrine, before having a relaxing cup of green tea at Meimei-an Teahouse.
Dining on board the Mizukaze will be an experience in itself. A spacious dining car with an open kitchen allows you to see your meals being prepared fresh on the train, even as you admire the scenery that passes by. Delicious creations by top chefs from renowned restaurants are guaranteed to tantalise your palate and bring fine dining to you.
Day 07 (Fri, 01 Dec’23)
Matsue – Higashihama – Tottori – Kyoto – Osaka

The final stop on your train journey will be at Higashihama where you will have breakfast at a restaurant along the coast and take in the sights of the sea as you savour a delectable meal. Then, take a final excursion to the Tottori Sand Dunes, naturally formed sand dunes reaching up to 50m in height and decorated in patterns by the wind, before visiting the Tottori Sand Museum where beautiful masterpieces by sand sculptors from around the world are on display.
Arriving back in Kyoto, you will bid goodbye to the Twilight Express Mizukaze and continue on to Osaka.
