Day 01

Upon collecting your car, we will start the day with a visit to Chitose Salmon Aquarium, where you can observe the fishes in the river from Japan’s first “underwater observation room". September to October is the very window whereby salmon fishes make the ardous final journey upstream to their place of birth to lay eggs. Be inspired, be humbled as you watch the very epitome of perseverance! We will then take a scenic drive to Lake Shikotsu, a caldera lake in the Shikotsu Toya National Park before continuing to our hotel in Toya Onsen Town for check-in. This is a hot spring resort town along the shore of Lake Toya, at the foot of Mt Usu. Not only can you unwind in the hotel onsen, you can enjoy brilliant displays of fireworks in the evening (only from April to October).

From June to late October, various kind of fruits would be available for harvest in the Sobetsu Fruit Village. A visit to a fruit farm will let you savour the rare joy of plucking apples and grapes yourself, something radically different from your ordinary supermarket routine. After filling your tummy with loads of fresh fruit, continue to Mt Usu Ropeway. A ride in its gondola will bring you close to its summit where there is an observation deck offering panoramic 360 degree views of Lake Toya and Mt Showa Shinzan. Take a short walk to the second observation deck and you will be able to see the Pacific Ocean and Mt Usu’s largest crater. If you continue to Noboribetsu, you will find the appropriately named Jigokudani or Hell Valley. A wooden walkway leads straight into the mouth of the volcanic valley with bubbling pits, hissing steam vents and mud ponds. Look out for boiling geysers, a hot spring that intermittenly spurts out a column of water and steam high up into the air. A hike will get you to the Oyunuma Brook natural footbath, where you can soak your tired feet in the flowing hot water. 

Day 03
Lake Toya – Otaru

Leaving Toya, we will visit Hoheikyo Dam, an arch-type concrete dam that can be accessed only by an electric bus ride through a one km tunnel. The combination of Nature and dam has turned this area into an optimal foliage viewing spot. Arriving in Otaru, you will find a nostalgic city with European-style buildings and old-fashioned street lanterns. Follow the trail of free samples ala breadcrumbs and you will effortlessly end up in one of LeTAO’s renowned confectioneries. Resistance is futile for those with a sweet tooth! Old warehouses that have been transformed into stylish restaurants, covered in gently creeping ivy and the presence of artists sketching portraits all add to the rustic charm of Otaru Canal. Step into the Venetian Museum of Art with its bits of beautiful glasswork and you may fell like you have travelled momentarily to Venice!

Otaru – Asahikawa

One way to drive from Otaru to Furano would be to take the expressway. The other more attractive, though slightly prolonged option – especially for those with a fondness for stretches of desolate coastline – is to take the long northern route up to Rumoi, a small seaside town. Facing the Sea of Japan, Cape Ogon or Golden Point is widely considered to be the place with the most magnificent sunset in Japan. As you come to Chippubetsu, stop by its Rose Garden, and smell the elegant rose scent that fills the air. At the Bara no Shiro Flora rest spot, you can find an observatory and a kiosk where you can buy Akazukinchan (literally “red-lover”) tomato juice and rose ice cream.

For Japan, the first signs of autumn usually appear in Daisetsuzan National Park, the largest national park in the country. Loosely translated to mean "garden where the Gods play" in Ainu language, the most prominent feature of the park would be the massive mountain range. Asahidake, the tallest peak at 2291 metres has the Asahidake Ropeway to bring visitors to the upper station, 1600 metres above sea level. Up there, there is a doable circular trail that will take about 60 minutes to complete, that will take you around the Sugatami Pond. Continue on to Biei and you will see why its beauty has attracted world-wide attention. Take a trip down Patchwork Road’s well-marked routes where Biei’s rural scenery is at its best. Named after its medley of crops that result in the fields looking like a patchwork quilt, there’s also a number of trees famous for being the botanical stars of commercials and dramas. No wonder! They cut a striking "figure"; looking majestic yet solitary against the vast vista of land and sky. Not far away from Shirogane Onsen lies the justly named Blue Pond that gets its colour due to the presence of aluminium deposits. With the Silver birch and Japanese larch trees jutting out of the water, it is strikingly mesmerizing and a pure magnet for photographers.

Asahikawa – Sapporo

Although Hokkaido might conjure images of majestic untamed wilderness, but in Furano, known affectionately as the “bellybutton” of Hokkaido, it’s the tenderly cultivated, neat flower fields that makes one gasp in wonder and amazement. There are numerous flower fields of various sizes across Furano planted with seasonal flowers that are visitor draws, even outside the lavender season. At Farm Tomita, the views of its flower fields against the backdrop of the Tokachi mountain range are visually spectacular. Besides the flower fields, there are cafes and shops that sell a wide range of lavender related products. Other popular farms with seasonal flowers is Shikisai no Oka where you can admire cheery rows of flowers, and Flower Land Kamifurano. Its hillside location also affords beautiful views of the Tokachi mountain range in tandem with the flower fields. You can ride through the fields on tractor pulled carts and try flower pressing as well.

Sapporo, Japan’s fifth largest city, has experienced rapid growth in a relatively short time. A web of underground stores offering souvenirs, apparels, footwear, jewellery, cosmetics and electronics makes Sapporo JR Station one of the largest shopping sites in Sapporo. There are multi-storey department stores such as Daimaru in the western wing and Esta in the eastern wing, and smaller shopping areas such as Apia, Paseo and Stellar Place. Yodobashi and Big Camera are good places to buy tax free electronics as well. One of Hokkaido’s most popular festivals – Sapporo Autumn Fest is held usually at the beginning of fall season. This year, the festival will be held in Odori Park from September 9 to 30. A showcase for food products from all corners of Hokkaido in one place, thousands of visitors attend the festival to taste the various local cuisines on offer.
