Singapore – Nagoya

Arriving in Nagoya this morning, make your first stop Uotaro Honten. A large fish market located on the bay, over 400 varieties of fresh seafood from the Ise and Mikawa Bay are sold here. See the different fresh and dried seafood, enjoy some freshly prepared seafood, or cook them yourself at the barbeque area.

Take a stroll at Tokugawa Garden later this afternoon. Built with the natural landscapes of Japan in mind, the garden features many elements such as a large pond, waterfalls, streams, rock arrangements and many flowers and plants. Especially beautiful when bathed in the colours of autumn, the garden is a pleasant spot for a relaxing stroll.

You will have some free time in Nagoya City this evening to enjoy shopping and eating in the fourth largest city in Japan. Go shopping at the many department stores around Nagoya Station, or head to Sakae, Nagoya’s most well-known shopping district filled with both brand name stores and shopping arcades. Try some of Nagoya’s specialty dishes like tebasaki, miso katsu, or hitsumabushi for a local dinner.

Nagoya – Gero Onsen

Opened in 2021, Seki Terrace is a multi-purpose facility showcasing Seki’s crafts and specialty products, namely Seki cutlery. With over 800 years of history in knife-making, Seki has gained renown for its high-quality products, even being recognised as one of the world’s three major cutlery producers. At the Cutlery Hall, you can find all kinds of cutlery from knives to nail clippers and learn a little about Seki’s cutlery manufacturing.

One of the former post towns along the old Nakasendo road connecting Tokyo and Kyoto, Magome has been beautifully preserved, providing a glimpse into 17th century Japan. Stroll along the cobblestone streets and rustic shophouses of this picturesque town and take in the atmosphere of historical Japan.

Day 03 (Tue, 13 Jun’23)

Gero Onsen – Takayama

Experience a traditional, small town atmosphere today, first at Gujo Hachiman. This riverside town is known for its pristine waters and the many canals, fountains and waterways are still used for daily activities like washing vegetables. Stop by at the charming pocket parks where potable water is available, and find out about another of Gujo Hachiman’s claims to fame – food replica making.

Another of Japan’s charming traditional towns, Hida Furukawa in the mountains of Gifu is famous for the high quality of timber found there. During warmer months, colourful carp can be seen swimming in the canal flowing through town, lined by iconic white-walled warehouses on either side.

Day 04 (Sat, 11 Nov’23)

Takayama

Ride the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway up into the clouds! The unique double-decker cable cars will bring you up the side of the Hotaka Mountain Range as you take in the surrounding views. At the top, 2,156m above sea level, let the panoramic view of the snow-capped Northern Japanese Alps take your breath away!

Take a stroll round the old-style streets of Takayama in the afternoon, where merchant houses dating back to the Edo period have been beautifully preserved. Step into the many shops and sake breweries along the street and try some of the local specialities.

Day 05 (Sun, 12 Nov’23)

Takayama – Wakura Onsen

Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go this morning. Nestled in the mountains of the Japan Alps are traditional gassho-zukuri farm houses whose roofs are built entirely without nails. Designed to withstand heavy snowfall, the unique structure of the houses make them particularly picturesque.

Neighbouring Gokayama is a smaller cluster of gassho-zukuri farmhouses that is less developed and retains more of the traditional feel. It is known for its traditional culture of folk dances and music, using instruments native to the area.

Day 06 (Mon, 13 Nov’23)

Wakura Onsen

Travelling up the Noto Kongo Coast, make a stop at Ganmon, the “gate rock” carved out by crashing waves. Head down to the natural sea cave to watch the waves burst through the ‘gate’ when the wind is high and take in the view of the wide expanse of coast and sea from the top of the rugged, tree-covered cliffs.

In a specially arranged FMJ Local Activity this afternoon, pay a visit to a Wajima lacquerware workshop where you can meet some of the craftsmen behind the exquisite lacquerware that Wajima is known for. Learn how each product is carefully crafted and perhaps pick up a few souvenirs to bring home.

Day 07 (Tue, 14 Nov’23)

Wakura Onsen – Kanazawa

Heading down to Kanazawa, take in the sights of the Chirihama beach driveway, the only beach in Japan which you can drive on. Cruise along the sandy beach as you watch the waves lapping the shoreline right next to you.

The “Kitchen of Kanazawa”, Omicho Market has been the go-to market in Kanazawa for centuries. Fresh seafood and produce are readily available along the narrow walkways of this indoor market, along with other household items and sundries.

Stop by at the icon of Kanazawa, Kenrokuen, one of Japan’s three most beautiful gardens. Gorgeous in every season, this sprawling hill-top garden contains all the features of a traditional Japanese garden and is very pleasant to stroll around, especially when painted in the red and golden hues of autumn.

Day 08 (Wed, 15 Nov’23)

Kanazawa – Komatsu – Haneda – Singapore

Make a stop at Natadera before heading back to Singapore later today. This 1,300-year-old Buddhist temple features multiple buildings that have been designated national Important Cultural Properties and Places of Scenic Beauty. Each autumn, the temple grounds are washed in shades of yellow and red and this place is easily one of the best spots for enjoying the autumn colours in Ishikawa.
