Haneda – Nikko
(-/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hoshino Resorts KAI Nikko (hot spring) or similar
Arriving in Tokyo this morning, your first stop will be the old town of Kawagoe. Known as “little Edo”, Kawagoe is filled with clay-walled warehouses and shops reminiscent of olden Japan. Once important to trade and commerce in Tokyo, the historic warehouses have been converted into shops and restaurants, beckoning visitors along with its neighbouring Candy Alley of stores selling old-school sweets.
The Nikko Toshogu Shrine is a must visit in Nikko. Built as the final resting place for Tokugawa Ieyasu, enshrined here as the “Great Deity of the East Shining Light”, it contains elements of both Buddhism and Shintoism, a practice that no longer exists today. Moreover, the extravagant design, which includes intricate wood carvings and gold leaf decorations, is a rarity amongst shrines in Japan. Admire the unique architecture and beautiful wood carvings of the buildings as you wander round the shrine grounds.

Kinugawa
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hoshino Resorts KAI Nikko (hot spring) or similar
Admire the scenic views as you travel on the Irohazaka Winding Road up to the Akechidaira Plateau where a ride on the Akechidaira Ropeway will bring you fantastic views of the surrounding valley and mountains bathed in autumn splendour. From here, you can take in a panoramic view of the Okunikko area, including Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Waterfall which you will stop by at next. Kegon Waterfall is the most famous of Nikko’s many falls and one of the most beautiful in Japan. This 97m tall waterfall is the only outlet for Lake Chuzenji situated behind it and is accompanied by about 12 smaller waterfalls to its side and back.
Moving further to Lake Yuno, take a pleasant walk around this pretty lake and admire the autumn colours that surround it. Named after the hot spring sources nearby, Lake Yuno, meaning “hot water lake”, culminates in a crashing 70m high waterfall that feeds into Lake Chuzenji downstream.
Day 03 (Tue, 29 Oct’19)
Kinugawa – Karuizawa
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Karuizawa Prince Hotel or similar
The majestic Fukiware Falls is a 30m wide waterfall along the Fukiware ravine. Likened to the Niagara Falls, Fukiware Falls was formed by water erosion creating a crack in the bedrock of the riverbed. Though only 7m high, the great width of the waterfall, the proximity which visitors can come to it, and its gorgeous surroundings make it worth a visit. This morning, you will go on a walking course through the ravine to admire the fantastic Fukiware Falls and its nearby sights.
In the afternoon, head to the Shikishima Park, known for its 2700 pine trees and beautiful rose garden where 7000 roses of 600 different varieties are planted. In time for the Autumn Rose Festival, the sweet sights and scents of the featured autumn roses can be enjoyed at their best.
Day 04 (Wed, 30 Oct’19)
Karuizawa
(Breakfast/Lunch/-)
Hotel: Karuizawa Prince Hotel or similar
Exploring Karuizawa today, you will be able to take in the autumn colours and relaxed atmosphere of the resort town. Bask in the autumn scenery at Kumoba Pond, where swans gather in winter. The coloured leaves of its surrounding trees create pretty images when reflected on the peaceful surface of the water. Walking around the pond, you can enjoy the bright maples and other local plants in the tranquil atmosphere. Moving over to the fashionable Harunire Terrace, browse the upmarket shops and boutiques set in a wooden terrace surrounded by the forest. The trendy and naturalistic atmosphere here is well maintained by its simple wooden design throughout. After lunch, have a leisurely stroll around the Kyu Karuizawa Ginza. Located in the centre of Karuizawa, this charming street is a popular shopping area with a relaxed atmosphere. Lined with shops, cafes, restaurants and a few sights, walk down the street and enjoy the pleasant ambience. Shop to your heart’s content at the Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza afterwards where rows of outlet stores carrying international and local brand names await.

One of the most beautiful and complete of Japan’s original castles, Matsumoto Castle is one of four castles designated as National Treasures of Japan. Its unique black exterior has earned it the name of “crow castle” while its well-maintained interior provides insight into history. Visiting during the annual chrysanthemum exhibition, you will get to see displays of gorgeous, blooming chrysanthemum flowers here too.
Nearby the castle is the quaint Nawate Street lined with quaint shops selling snacks and souvenirs, embodying the atmosphere of an old castle town. You will notice many frog designs and sculptures along the street, a reference to the past when the songs of frogs echoed through the riverbank. The Japanese word for ‘frog’ also sounds like ‘return home’, thus making it symbolic of a safe return.
