Naritasan Omotesando Street is an 800m long old town street that still retains the charm of Edo period Japan. In fact, some of the buildings here have existed since then! Walk along the shops, peruse locally-made products, and snack on yokan sweet bean jelly, rice crackers and more. Don’t miss out on the many shops selling eel, the delicacy of Narita, too! At the end of the street, step into Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, a historical Buddhist temple that is over 1000 years old. Boasting one of the largest temple grounds in Japan, many of the old temple buildings date back to the Edo period and some of them have been designated as important cultural properties.
Later, pay a visit to the magnificent sea cliffs of Byobugaura located along the north-eastern coast of Chiba prefecture. The 40m to 50m high cliffs stretch for around 10m along the coast and are said to resemble the White Cliffs of Dover in the United Kingdom. Admire the impressive cliffs before heading over to the Inubosaki lighthouse, a 31m tall white tower overlooking the coast. Considered as one of the 100 most important lighthouses in the world, you can climb the 99 stairs to the top of the tower for panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean and coastline.

Next, stop by at Higeta Shoyu Factory to learn how the local speciality of soy sauce is produced. Opened in 1616, the factory still uses traditional techniques from the Edo period to produce their soy sauce. Moving on to some wine appreciation next, head to Ushiku Chateau, Japan’s first full scale winery. Including vineyards, wine cellars, gardens, museums and restaurants, enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Ushiku Chateau along with its wine and craft beers.

Take in the beauty of this garden full of flowers and greenery!
Surround yourself with fields of flowers next at the Hitachi Seaside Park! Located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, this spacious park is home to a huge variety of flowers and other plants. A must-visit in Nikko is the Nikko Toshogu Shrine. Built as the final resting place for Tokugawa Ieyasu, enshrined here as the “Great Deity of the East Shining Light”, it contains elements of both Buddhism and Shintoism, a practice that no longer exists today. Moreover, the extravagant design, which includes intricate wood carvings and gold leaf decorations, is a rarity amongst shrines in Japan.
