Today, you will get some insight into the world of sumo wrestling, Japan’s national sport. Head to the sumo town of Ryogoku, at one point the most vibrant town in Edo (today’s Tokyo). Visit one of the many sumo stables where sumo wrestlers live and train and observe one of their practice sessions. Later, walk over to the Edo-Tokyo Museum where you can see and learn more about life in Edo though both miniature and life-sized displays. Step into a different world and learn about the history and significance of the places you will visit on this trip.
Truly immerse yourself in the sumo culture of Ryugoku by dining like a sumo wrestler at lunch! Tuck into Chanko Nabe, a hot pot full of vegetables, meat and seafood that is commonly eaten by sumo wrestlers. Filling and nutritious, chanko nabe is eaten in large quantities to help them maintain their weight.
Walk off your full lunch by strolling around the streets of Ryogoku where images and statues of sumo wrestlers decorate the street and gardens, temples and museums are waiting to be visited. After spending the day on all things sumo, it is only fitting to culminate it by watching a live sumo wrestling match at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena, Japan’s top sumo stadium. Feel the excitement of the match and marvel at the skill and rituals involved in sumo.
The day ends with a feast of tempura, a food created in Nagasaki but perfected and popularised in Edo. Formally eaten as a fast food at roadside food stalls, tempura today has evolved to include many variations and is one of the staple Japanese foods.
Day 03 (Thu, 17 Jan’19)
Tokyo
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Imperial Hotel Tokyo or similar
Pay a visit to one of Tokyo’s fish markets this morning, where fresh seafood and produce are brought in daily. Walk around the market as you as your special guide, a chef from a Japanese restaurant, shows you the ins and outs of the place. After an educational tour of the market, you will have a Japanese lunch at the chef’s restaurant and savour your meal with a little more knowledge of how it was acquired.
After lunch, stroll around Ginza, the original downtown centre of Tokyo. Built on top of a former swamp, Ginza set a new standard in traditional Japan with its western style brick buildings. The area is now known as being a high-end district where many luxury brand stores are located, but it is also home to some gems from the past with rich histories and stories to tell.
This evening, you will enjoy a sushi dinner. The iconic food of Japan, the sushi that we know today with raw fish placed on top of vinegar-seasoned rice originated in Edo and was a speciality at the time due to Edo’s close location to the harbour. Although sushi can now be found all over Japan and the world, go back to where it all began in Tokyo with a greater appreciation of its roots.
Day 04 (Fri, 18 Jan’19)

Head to Tokyo, and Japan’s, point of origin at Nihonbashi today. Nihonbashi bridge after which the area was named is where Kilometre Zero, or the point from which all distances in Japan to Tokyo are measured, can be found. The former financial district of Edo, this is also where the first department store in Japan was built and many shops with histories dating back centuries can still be found here among newer additions to the skyline.
It is here in Nihonbashi where soba noodles were first eaten four hundred years ago. The first soba noodle shop in Edo was opened here, and soup-style soba originated here as well. Given the strong connection between soba noodles and Nihonbashi, it is only fitting to have a meal of soba noodles here.
For today’s dinner, you will get to decide what to eat! Based on customers’ requests, we will arrange for the most popular dinner choice for tonight.
