In 1958, Momofuku Ando created the instant ramen industry with his invention of the Chicken Ramen. Fast-forwarding to 1971, the world’s first ramen served in a cup was developed and it became entrenched deeply in everyone’s daily life from that moment. Over at the Nissin Cup Noodle Museum, just a stone’s throw from your hotel, you will get further acquainted with the Japanese ramen culture through their engaging displays and you can even let little ones explore Cup Noodles Park, where they can enjoy life of ramen from “ a noodle’s point of view"! Less than one hour drive south of Tokyo, Kamakura is a seaside city and a prominent resort town known for its numerous historical monuments and summer sand beaches. Moreover, Kamakura is renowned for its Great Buddha, a monumental outdoor bronze statue of Amida Buddha which is one of the most famous icons of Japan. What is even more amazing is that Kamakura’s Great Buddha has been kept intact without any large-scale restorations since it was built in mid-13th Century.
Day 03
Lake Kawaguchi – Shizuoka
(Drive: Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Nippondaira Hotel or similar
Start your day by exploring the subterranean wonder of Narusawa Ice Cave, a nationally designated Natural Monument. The highlight of this 153m long lava cave are the countless ice pillars formed from water droplets that seep through the rocks above. With the constant low temperatures in the cave, locals used it as storage space for ice when there were no refrigerators around yet! Next up is a visit to Fuji Kachoen Garden. Here, in this amazing flower garden and bird sanctuary, you can get up close to adorable owls and surround yourself with colourful flowers that bloom whole year round. Then you will be going to the Fuji Safari Park on the southern slopes of Mt Fuji. You can drive through the safari zone with your own car and observe the freely roaming animals including lions, tigers, bears, giraffes, cheetahs, elephants, rhinoceroses, zebras and bison. Never mind how many times it has appeared on postcards, paintings, or even the back of the 1,000yen note, Mt Fuji still stirs the spirits of those who visit it. It sweeps up majestically from the Pacific to form a nearly perfect symmetrical cone of 3,776m. Head back to your hotel early today to enjoy the breathtaking view of Mt Fuji. This view will be even more spectacular in winter as the air is clearer!
Day 04
Shizuoka – Ito
(Drive: Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Laforet Ito Onsen (Hot Spring) or similar
In the morning, you will be visiting the Mishima Skywalk. Newly opened in December last year, it is a 400-metre overhead walkway which is the nation's longest cable-suspended pedestrian bridge. It cost 4 billion yen to construct this bridge and you can get another stunning view of Mt Fuji from here. Long before Mishima Skywalk, there has been a must-try for everyone who is visiting Mishima – Unagi. Walking along the streets, you will find your mouth water as the smoky smells of grilled eel wafts tantalizingly and staff of different shops vie for your attention with their cheerful calls. Fruit-picking is a popular activity in Japan for both the visitors and locals alike. You will get a chance to pick and eat the sweetest mandarin oranges at Izu Fruit Park before heading back to the hotel tonight.
Day 05
Ito
(Drive: Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Laforet Ito Onsen (Hot Spring) or similar
Moving along the rugged coast of west Izu today, you will explore Dogashima - famous for its dramatic stone formations, cliffs and caves formed by the lava flow of past volcanic eruptions and erosion by the sea. The best way to fully take in the splendid scenery is by taking the sightseeing tour boat. The highlight of the boat ride will be the Tensodo Cave. This Natural Treasure of Japan is sublimely beautiful, with aquamarine water and bright sunlight streaming through the open roof of the cave. A visit to the Izu Cactus Park is up this afternoon. Not only will you get to see different species of cactus here, you will also get to meet many of the park’s free-range animals. The park is especially famous for the capybaras that enjoy an outdoor bath with the seasonal mandarin oranges!
