Day 02
Aomori
(C: B/L/D)
Hotel: Hoshino Resort Oirase Keiryu Hotel (Hot Spring) or similar
First up for today is a visit to the Towada Art Center. Opened in the spring of 2008 as the centerpiece of Towada city’s rejuvenation efforts through art, this contemporary art museum has a truly unique concept of presenting its visitors with new experiences at unexpected turns. As the art here is not always found where you would expect it to be, delightful surprises await! Be caught up in the beauty of Tohoku’s nature as you explore some of Tohoku’s most beautiful places in their summer glory. Flowing along the floor of the Oirase Gorge, the Oirase River winds through a pristine forest made up of towering white cedar, Japanese beech and maple trees. As you follow the river round its bends, you can feast your eyes on the symphony of crisp summer greens of the foliage and the clear river water. It has been said that “there is no other lake like Lake Towada in the world, just as there is no other mountain like Mt Fuji.” It is a crater lake that sits atop a 400-meter high mountain and surrounded by the steep, forested cliffs of the caldera rim made up of soaring mountains between 600 to 1,000 meters. After today, it is probably not hard to think that Nature creates some of the world’s most sublime art.
Day 03
Aomori - Hakodate
(C: B/L/D)
Hotel: La Vista Hakodate Bay (Hot Spring) or similar
Before leaving Aomori, you need to visit the Hasshoku Center. Here, fresh seafood from the nearby Hachinohe Port are available. You can buy the fresh seafood, grill them over the hot charcoals and eat them right on the spot! Arriving into Hakodate city after taking the bullet train, you can take a ride up to the top of the Goryokaku Tower to get a bird’s eye view of Japan’s first western-style fort. It was the site where the last stage of the Boshin War was fought in the “Battle of Hakodate” (1868 – 1869) between the emerging Meiji Government and the Tokugawa Government. As the sun sets, a visit to the Mt Hakodate Ropeway is in store. Awarded the three star rating in the “Michelin Green Guide Japon”, the ropeway brings you up 334 metres above sea level to one of world’s top three night views.
Day 06
Rusutsu
(C: B/-/D)
Hotel: Rusutsu Resort (Hot Spring) or similar
A fun-filled day of activities await as you get to experience a variety of outdoor activities on your free day at Rusutsu Resort. From horse-riding to paragliding; you even get to have a go at their theme park! Time to grab your family, sense of adventure, and indulge in the inner child inside everyone!
Day 07
Rusutsu - Sapporo
(C: B/L/D)
Hotel: JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo or similar
Extending defiantly into the deep blue Sea of Japan, the precarious cliffs of Cape Kamui and unique rock formations make for a stunning photo stop this morning. Today seems to be the day to bask in the wonderful nature of Hokkaido as you drop by the Fukidashi Park. Nestled in the foot of Mt Yotei – Hokkaido’s very own Mt Fuji, the park sprouts over 80,000 tons of water per day. Do as the locals do here over at one of Japan’s top hundred best springs; bring an empty bottle with you to collect the spring water! In the afternoon, you will spend some time in Otaru. With a rich history that dates back to its early days as a major herring centre and the terminal station for Hokkaido’s first railroad, Otaru’s charming buildings now house whimsical music box museums, patisseries with absolutely tempting cream puffs and also those selling intricate glassware ornaments.
Day 04
Hakodate
(C: B/L/D)
Hotel: La Vista Hakodate Bay (Hot Spring) or similar
Heading northwards this morning, you will visit the Onuma Quasi-national Park. Located at the foot of Mt Komagatake, an active volcano, this is a good place for a stop to stretch your legs and to take in the beauty of Hokkaido’s scenery. The view of Mt Komagatake reflected on the waters of the island-studded lakes has garnered Onuma the honour as one of Japan’s New Three Famous Views. Coming back into Hakodate, a visit to the Hakodate Bay is a must. A picturesque series of red brick buildings lining the waterfront were once used as warehouses back in 1909. Now, it is home to over 40 shops housing well-known patisseries, local crafts and even designer honey. Soft, bite-sized cheesecakes literally take the cake as Hakodate’s most popular dessert. Made from fresh Hokkaido milk and eggs, these heavenly-sinful goodies can be sampled here too!
