Singapore – Haneda – Tottori – Kaike Onsen
(-/Lunch/Dinner)

Starting off your trip in Tottori, visit its icon, the Tottori Sand Dunes. Spanning 16km by 2km along the coast of the Sea of Japan, the naturally formed sand dunes reach up to 50m in height. Trek up to the Umanose “Horse’s Back” for outstanding views of the sea and sand ripples caused by wind sweeping across its surface.
For lunch, dine at Japan’s original shabu shabu restaurant. A dish that is now available all over Japan, shabu shabu originated when the restaurant’s founder brought the style of eating thin slices of meat lightly cooked in soup to Tottori from China. Replacing mutton with Tottori’s famous Olein 55 wagyu beef, shabu shabu here is matched perfectly with a sesame sauce in a mouth-watering combination.
Stop by Sweets Castle Kotobukijo later, a popular sweets store that sells confections from the Sanin area. Not only does it sell a large variety of sweets, the store itself is modelled after the former Yonago castle and is an amusing sight to see.

One of Japan’s most important shrines, Izumo Shine is often considered to be the oldest having existed since before the 7th century. It houses the deity Okuninushi, the mythological creator of Japan and deity of marriage, and is a designated National Treasure. Also found in this magnificent shrine is Japan’s largest shimenawa, a sacred rope made of straw.
Following that, have lunch with a view at Yuushien Garden. Most famous for its peony flowers with up to 250 varieties grown here, they are showcased together with other seasonal flowers among traditional landscape garden elements like ponds, waterfalls, streams and rock gardens, creating magnificent scenes of beauty.
Winter is the season for crabs and there is no better place to enjoy it than Tottori, the self-proclaimed ‘crab prefecture’ and number one producer of crabs in Japan. Dig in to succulent Matsuba crabs bursting with rich sweetness for dinner tonight!

Established in 1980 by Adachi Zenko in order to combine his love of art and garden design, the Adachi Museum of Art houses a collection of renowned Japanese paintings, ceramics and other artwork. However, it is best known for its award-winning garden. The six stunning gardens here are said to be “as beautiful as pictures” and are indeed incredibly photogenic.
Moving on to Hiroshima this afternoon, visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Peace Memorial Museum. Dedicated to promoting peace and the memory of the 1945 atomic bombing on Hiroshima, various monuments in the park and exhibits in the museum serve as a reminder of the devastation that war causes and the importance of peace.

One of the three most famous bridges in Japan, Kintaikyo Bridge stretches across the 200-metre width of the Nishiki River. Constructed from six different kinds of wood joined by expert craftsmanship, the five wooden arches of the bridge are so picturesque that they have been awarded two stars in the Michelin Green Guide to Japan.
In the afternoon, pay a visit to Rurikoji Temple, home to one of Japan’s three most beautiful pagodas. The five-storey pagoda is a National Treasure and one of the oldest in the country. This historical monument is built with a smaller top floor and bigger lower floor, making it look very well-proportioned.
Day 05 (Fri, 28 Jan’20)
Nagato Onsen – Fukuoka
(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Hotel: Hotel Okura Fukuoka or similar
Head to Akiyoshidai Plateau this morning, the largest karst plateau in Japan. At an altitude of 200 to 400 metres and surrounded by mountains, the plateau is dotted with many unique limestone rock formations and caves eroded over the years by the rain. This is where you will find Japan’s longest cave, Akiyoshido. Estimated to be 8.9 metres long, only the first kilometre is open to visitors to walk through and marvel at the fantastic limestone formations in this over 300-million-year-old cave.
For lunch today, feast on Yamaguchi’s delicacy and a wintertime speciality, fugu, or blowfish. Often mistaken to be a dangerous food, fugu has been enjoyed by Japanese people for centuries and is safely prepared by licenced chefs. Savour the firm, slightly sweet flesh of fugu in a variety of ways and taste what is considered by many to be the most delicious fish!
