Arriving in Kansai this morning, spend a leisurely afternoon exploring the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Serving as the residence of the Imperial Family up until the capital was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo in 1868, the stately palace stands in a large park that is open to the public. Stroll around the palace grounds and admire the old buildings, lawns and gardens.
Day 02 (Wed, 26 Sep)
Kyoto – Okayama

Begin your journey on the luxury train Twilight Express Mizukaze today. Built on the concept of “superior quality with a touch of nostalgia”, the former sleeper train, Twilight Express, has been redesigned into a luxury train boasting sophisticated design, posh interiors, haute cuisine and the comfort of a hotel. Travelling round the Sanyo and Sanin coast, breathtaking views can be seen outside of your room window or from observation cars as you coast along the scenic route.
Not only will you marvel at the idyllic scenery from the train, planned stopovers allow you to enjoy the local sights and offerings at each area too. The first stop will be at Okayama, home to one of Japan’s three great gardens, Korakuen. The carefully curated garden combines aspects of nature into a picture-perfect scene, backed by the ‘borrowed scenery’ of Okayama Castle. The best view of the garden is designed to be had from Enyotei, a villa exclusively opened to the passengers of Mizukaze to enjoy the view.

Wake up to the beautiful Sea of Japan as the train makes its way along the Orii Coast. Visiting the Unnan area today, you will be treated to a performance of Izumo Kagura, a traditional dance telling the stories of myths and historical events that is performed for the gods of the shrine. Explore the tranquil beauty of Suga Shrine, Japan’s first shrine and the birthplace of waka poetry, before having a relaxing cup of green tea at Meimei-an Teahouse.
Dining on board the Mizukaze will be an experience in itself. A spacious dining car with an open kitchen allows you to see your meals being prepared fresh on the train, even as you admire the scenery that passes by. Delicious creations by top chefs from renowned restaurants are guaranteed to tantalise your palate and bring fine dining to you.
Day 04 (Fri, 28 Sep)
Unnan – Iwami – Kyoto – Arashiyama

The final stop on your train journey will be at Higashihama. Visit the Uradome Coast, a Global Geopark with dramatic cliffs, caves and rocks that emerge from the ocean. Aside from admiring nature’s beauty on the scenic coast, you will also see a seine fishing demonstration on the beach. Have lunch at a restaurant along the coast and take in the sights of the sea as you savour a delectable meal before embarking on the final leg of your train journey.
Arriving back in Kyoto, you will bid goodbye to the Twilight Express Mizukaze and continue on your tour.
Day 05 (Sat, 29 Sep)
Arashiyama

This morning, explore the old town of Arashiyama, a popular scenic district at the base of the Arashiyama mountains. Walk along the streets lined with shops selling all kinds of snacks and souvenirs, and stop by the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge, not forgetting the famed bamboo groves, undoubtedly the highlight of Arashiyama.
In the afternoon, you will have a choice of three special activities arranged for you. Details of the activities will be provided at a later date.
Day 06 (Sun, 30 Sep)
Arashiyama – Mishima – Ito

Today starts with a visit to Nishiki Market, the ‘Kitchen of Kyoto’. Started as a fish market in 1615, most of the over 100 shops here have been run by the same families for generations. Sample the seasonal food offerings of Kyoto and feel the warmth and liveliness of the locals as you walk through the market.
After lunch, you will take a bullet train to Mishima for the next leg of your journey.
Day 07 (Mon, 01 Oct)

An ancient Buddhist temple founded in 807 by Kobo Daishi, a prominent Buddhist teacher, Shuzenji Temple is one of Japan’s important cultural properties. As the setting of the rise and fall of the Minamoto clan, the beautiful temple is rich in history and has been awarded 2 stars in the Michelin Green Guide.
As a special treat today, you will have a Flower Arrangement Demonstration by none other than Mr Shogo Kariyazaki. As one of Japan’s most sought-after masters of flower arrangement, Mr Kariyazaki features prominently in Japanese media and culture for his sense of beauty and original approach to the traditional art. Taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with FMJ customers today, you will get to see a master at work in this exclusive session.
Day 08 (Tue, 02 Oct)
Ito – Tokyo

Take a bullet train to Tokyo this morning where you will have some Free and Easy time to go shopping or explore the sights of the metropolis. In the evening, we will have a special Farewell Dinner to conclude our wonderful journey together.
