CUSTOM
No duty on personal effects. Individual over 18 years may bring 400 cigarettes or 100 grams of cigars or 500g of tobacco and 3 bottles of liquor (0.75 liters). Other dutiable goods to the value of Yen 100,000 for adults may be included duty free. Lighter is prohibited to bring in Japan.

Japan is 1 hour ahead of Singapore. GMT/UTC plus nine hours.
CURRENCY
Japanese Yen (JPY) is used throughout the country. Japanese Yen is denominated into coins Yen 1, Yen 5, Yen 10, Yen 50, Yen 100, and Yen 500. Bank notes are Yen 1000, Yen 2000, Yen 5000 and Yen 10,000. Major international credit cards such as American Express, JCB, Diners Clubs, Master-card and Visa are widely recognized.
ELECTRICITY
The voltage in Japan is 100 Volt, which is different from North America (110V), Singapore (220V) and most other regions of the world. Japanese electrical plugs have two, non-polarized pins.
WATER
Tap water is safe to drink anywhere in Japan. Mineral water including major imported brands can be easily obtained from super markets, convenience stores, etc.

Since there is no custom of tipping in Japan, people will often refuse tips. Since the people of Japan place more importance in the spiritual aspect of things, most prefer a smile and a "thank you" instead of a tip.

HANDPHONE
Japan operates on a different network from Singapore thus local handset is not compatible for use in Japan. 3G 3.5G phone can be used in Japan provided it comes with a 3G SIM card and Auto roam subscription)
