Day 01
Singapore – Fukuoka – Yufuin
(D: -/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Yufuin UBL Hotel (Hot spring) or similar
(Car pick-up at Fukuoka Airport)
Let your first stop in Kyushu be one with an amazing view! Rakanji, one of Oita’s grandest temples, is built into the cliffs of Mt Rakan. It is famous for multiple caves, 3,700 stone buddhas, and splendid panoramas from its platforms. Stretch your legs as you explore the depths, and heights, of the temple grounds, or for the less physically fit, take a chair lift up for the view.
Next, head to Hita Mameda Town, a well preserved district of historic buildings. While many of the traditional Japanese houses have been converted into cafes, museums and shops, the street itself still retains the flavour of the Edo period. Gas lamps still line the streets and electric cables are purposely hidden underground to preserve the traditional feel.
Before heading to your hotel for the night, why not stop by Lake Kinrinko? A small lake at the base of the twin-peaked Mt Yufu, it is located at the end of the main walking street in Yufuin. Fed by the same hot spring waters that feed into the hotels, the reflection of the mountain and surroundings in the calm water is a sight to see.
Day 02
Yufuin– Aso
(D: Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Hotel Yumeshizuku (Hot spring) or similar
Not for the faint-hearted, the Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge is one of the longest and tallest pedestrian suspension bridges in Japan. Spanning 390m across a mountain valley and towering at 777m in height, fantastic views of beautiful waterfalls, great forests, mountain ranges and a deep valley can be had from here.
Kurokawa Onsen is one of Japan’s most beautiful hot spring towns with a well preserved traditional atmosphere. Earthy tones and wooden structures along with lush greenery and a river flowing through the town make it particularly pleasant to stroll through. Drop in at the many quaint cafes and shops and spend a relaxing afternoon here.
Day 03
Aso
(D: Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Hotel Yumeshizuku (Hot spring) or similar
One of Miyazaki prefecture’s most famous sights, Takachiho Gorge is a V-shaped gorge created by the Gokase River eroding through volcanic rock. The 17m high Minainotaki waterfall cascading into the river midway through the gorge paints a particularly impressive picture as the clear water cascades down against a background of grey cliffs and green foliage.
Steeped in mythology, the Amano Iwato Shrine is built near a cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu was said to have hidden herself from her brother, depriving the world of light. Built at the edge of a river surrounded by tranquil forests, the shrine is shrouded in a mystical air befitting of the legend behind it.
Day 04
Aso – Kumamoto – Nagasaki
(D: Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Unzen Kanko Hotel (Hot spring) or similar
Take a stroll around Suizenji Jojuen Park, a traditional Japanese landscape garden built in the 17th century. Structured after the 53 stations of the Tokaido, a famous road connecting Edo and Kyoto during the Edo period, the garden consists of perfectly placed ponds, trees and hills, including a mini version of Mt Fuji.
Make a stop at Unzen Onsen, one of Japan’s most famous hot spring resort towns. Popular amongst foreigners, you can find western influenced architecture as you explore the town. One of the attractions in town, the Unzen Vidro Museum showcases an extensive collection of glassware from around the world, along with ceramics and paintings. Do not miss Unzen Jigoku, sulphurous hot spring ‘hells’ scattered around the sides of the town, marked by constant clouds of steam billowing above the bubbling pools and vents.
Day 05
Nagasaki
(D: Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Luke Plaza Hotel or similar
The Oura Catholic Church, with its European style architecture and stained glass windows, was built at the end of the Edo period by French missionaries and is considered the oldest church in Japan. Dedicated to 26 Christian martyrs, it is also the first western-style building to be designated as a National Treasure.
Home to 180 adorable penguins, the Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium is the place to go for your dose of cuteness! Visitors can see, touch and feed the penguins and learn all about their way of life. Within the museum grounds is also a biotope where you can observe plants and animals that live in Nagasaki’s countryside.
At Glover Garden, former residences of Western merchants who settled in Nagasaki can be seen, including the Former Glover House, the oldest Western-style wooden building in Japan. The open-air museum is complemented by attractive gardens with cobblestone paths and wall fountains fitting for the houses they surround.
Day 06
Nagasaki – Takeo
(D: Breakfast/-/Dinner)
Hotel: Yumotoso Toyokan (Hot spring) or similar
Get up close to the islands dotting the Kujukushima Bay on the Kujukushima Cruise. Although its name means “99 islands”, there are in fact only 208 islands in the bay. Nonetheless, the various formations and rock patterns of the islands provide scenic views as you meander round them on a stylish cruise boat.
Sprawling out over 150,000 square metres at the base of Mt Mifune, Mifuneyama Rakuen is a picturesque garden sculpted over 3 years by former ruler of Takeo, Shigeyoshi Nabeshima. The mountain, trees, flowers, pond and tea houses all come together beautifully, like a scene from a Chinese painting.
Day 07
Takeo – Fukuoka
(D: Breakfast/Lunch/-)
Hotel: Royal Park Hotel The Fukuoka or similar
The highlight of this tour, today you will experience a very special Takeo Rice Planting Activity! Home to Saga Biyori rice, Tachibana Town has been responsible for producing this high quality rice, ranked “Special A grade” for seven consecutive years. The standard of Saga Biyori is so high that it is even used on the luxury cruise train Seven Stars.
Be warmly received by the mayor and people of Tachibana as they welcome you with wide smiles and warm hearts. Join them in FMJ’s own rice fields and experience planting rice, both by hand and using a rice transplanter, under the guidance of local farmers and agricultural experts. With a newfound understanding of the work that goes into cultivating rice, savour some of this top grade rice, lovingly prepared by the locals.
